Halima opens her eyes to look around, she's in a white room with everything white. Maybe she's already in heaven, afterall she deserves it because even devil knows that she's suffered a lot from Sa'eed in the name of marriage and Ibadah. Just as she turns, she meets two large eyes looking intently at her soul, they're creepy and awfully close to her face. She screams and scrambles to the other side of the bed, ignoring the protests her body is giving in form of pain from every part of your body.
"Hey calm down, be careful, don't open up your stitches." The man says smiling amusedly.
"Stitches? Who are you? What do you want? Where am I? And most importantly, how did I get here? I thought I was in heaven?" The man laughs as Halima throws questions at him.
"My name is Doctor Aliyu Kwami. I'm a general surgeon and I was going to my house when I saw you three days ago lying in the middle of the road so I brought you to a private part of a hospital. I've been awaiting your consciousness so that I can know who you are and what happened to you. Though I have some questions for you, were you raped? How did you twist your ankle so badly and how did you get all those injuries?" Halima feels tears welling up in her eyes and immediately he notices.
"Hey, it's okay you don't have to tell me anything. I was just curious that's all." Halima nods and wipes her tears before asking for his phone. He hands it over to her and she dials her mother's number.
"Assalamu Alaikum Mummy." Halima cries immediately the call is picked.
"Halima?" Halima hears shuffling and then another voice asking if it was really her.
"Halima where have you been? Ya Rabbul Khaliqeen! Do you have any idea how worried we've been this past week. I even thought Sa'eed had finally killed you for me. Where are you?" Hajjo asks and Halima says in a hospital. Doctor Aliyu collects the phone.
"Assalamu Alaikum this is Doctor Aliyu speaking, i found this lady here on the road side at games village so I brought her to the hospital I work in, but a private room. She's been here for the past three days and she just regained consciousness." Doctor Aliyu is cut off by Audu's relieved voice.
"Hold on, did you say you're doctor Aliyu? As in Doctor Aliyu Kwami?" Doctor Aliyu says yes and Audu asks if he can come to his office.
He excuses himself and walks to his office to meet Audu, Hajjo and Abba. Immediately he enters, they bombard him with questions.
"Please, let me explain."
Doctor Aliyu huffs, kicking a rock. He hates his useless car. And the one he ordered from Cotonou hasn't arrived. Resisting the urge to cry, he sights something from his peripheral vision laying on the ground. When he looks, he meets with a half dead Halima.
He quickly takes her to his car and orders an Uber which takes them back to the hospital. He asks that she's wheeled to a private room where he stitches her up and takes care of her for three days before she starts moving.
He keeps his eyes on her so close, just praying that she wakes up already.
Audu and Abba look like they're about to murder someone while Hajjo looks confused.
"But how did she get there?"
"I think the answer would be best heard from her." Audu says and shakes Doctor Aliyu rigidly, he nods stiffly once and they all leave the office at once with Doctor Aliyu leading them to the private room.
Immediately they enter, Hajjo falls to the ground with a loud thud scaring a crying Halima. The latter scrambles on the bed and pulls out the drip from her hand forcefully leaving a trail of blood. Not minding the pain that shoots up everywhere in her body, she rushes to Hajjo and hugs her leaving them both a crying mess on the floor.
After the emotional reunion between the mother and daughter, Audu sits down while Hajjo rushes to go get her food and clothing. Abba informs Amal and Afnan and Afnan hurries to go see her sister in law. After they've all exchanged hugs and Halima has eaten, Halima is asked to explain what happened as so she does.
"That day that Teemah fell down the stairs and was taken to the hospital, a nurse suggests i see a gynecologist when I told her about the problems I'm having with my menstrual period." Halima says unfazed. On a normal day, she'd be shy talking about this to her father, father in law and sisters in law but this is no normal day. But no day will ever be normal to Halima again. Moreover, every single ounce of shame, self respect and shyness has been stripped off her by Sa'eed and Aleesha. Only the thought of Sa'eed's name makes Halima's heart skip a beat, making her think he's there.
"When I visited the gynecologist, I was told that I'm barren as a drug has destroyed almost all of my ovaries. The doctor put me on diet and after Sa'eed started behaving out of the normal, the day that Ammi was hit on the head by Sa'eed, Sa'eed and Aleesha kidnapped me and took me to one area called village games or something like that. He asked me to do alot of disgusting things to him and on the last day, he raped me thrice." Tears gather in Halima's eyes but she closes her eyes taking deep breaths trying to push them back. She can't cry for Sa'eed no more. She's cried more than enough and he doesn't deserve it.
"Now I don't think I can give birth anymore because the last time I went to the hospital, the doctor said I should avoid intercourse. Well in a nutshell I have stitches now and won't give birth." The tears that Halima closed her eyes to stop from falling push themselves out and fall out. Hajio reaches out to her but Audu holds her hand back and nods no to her.
"She needs to learn to fight her battles alone. We can't always be fighting for her. One day, we'll have to leave this world, and if we do before her, how will she fight her battles?" Audu whispers and Hajjo slumps looking sadly at her daughter.
