"So now care to explain what happened to you?" Halima chuckles, but the chuckle holds not even an iota of mirth or levity.
"I'm pregnant." Is the only thing Halima says making Fatima smirk.
"Well it's about time. I knew you guys wouldn't take long. When you're always all over each other." Halima smiles again, in ironic one.
"You didn't ask me where I am. Does this look like our house?" Fatima looks behind Halima and asks if they've gone on another honeymoon.
"Well, Aleesha..." and Halima tells her everything that has happened in the past four months. Every single thing and at the end of it, Fatima has tears in her eyes.
"Just look at how you narrated everything without as much as a drop of tear. If this happened to me wallahi I'll just die. And how could Ya Sa'eed be so cruel. So where's Ya Sa'eed now? And Aleesha?"
"Well, the day I landed here she called me and was saying different incoherent things. At the end of it someone collected the phone and said she's being taken to a mental asylum so I think you get the gist. As for Sa'eed, I don't really know. And I don't want to know." Fatima nods. She doesn't blame Halima for saying she doesn't want to know how or where Sa'eed is. If it were someone else in Halima's shoes she would've left the house when she had the chance but because it's Halima, she didn't.
"What did Abba and Ammi say when they found out?" Fatima asks. Halima omitted the part where Sa'eed hit Innayo on the head intentionally. She knows that if she tells Fatima, she'd kill Sa'eed the moment she sets her eyes on him, literally.
"Well..." Halima scratches her forehead with her hand. She's looking for something to say that isn't a complete lie but doesn't involve saying Innayo is in a coma.
"I know you. You want to lie. Don't even try it. Don't you know that saying a truth that hurts now but heals forever is way better than telling a lie that heals now but hurts forever." Halima rolls her eyes. She misses her best friend but she doesn't miss this part of her.
"Yeah yeah. Whatever." Fatima sighs.
"I'm being serious. Now tell, what about Abba and Ammi?" Halima gulps. Well she has to say the truth now.
"Sa'eed hit Ammi on the head with a whip that he uses to flog me and she fainted. I together with Amal rushed her to the hospital and they said her heart swole up and her blood pressure shot up. Well now she's in a coma but Afnan called yesterday to say she twitched her fingers." Fatima gasps.
"That useless unhelpful good for nothing wee inept fool! I'm even out of words to use on him. She's our mother fah. For crying out loud! I'm going to strangle him with my own two bare hands till he's out of breath. Then I'll bury him right beneath Ammi's hospital bed." Fatima seethes.
"I support you one hundred percent. And I also remembered something just now. Promise you won't get angry." Fatima narrows her eyes to slits.
"I hope it's nothing serious." Halima smiles.
"Of course it isn't. Who am I kidding? It's kind of serious. It's about Amal." Halima fiddles with her fingers.
"What about Amal? She still hates me right? I don't even know what I did to her fah. She just hates me for no reason. If I land i won't go home. Instead, I'll go to Adda Afrah... Wait, Adda Afrah hates me too. What is wrong with me? Everybody hates me, except you of course. I know that you are also just tolerating me. When I go home, I'll tell Abba to just get me married to the man if his choice. I can't live like this anymore." Fatima ends the call and goes offline.
Halima calls her with her phone and she doesn't pick. She calls again and again before she knows it, the number is switched off. She runs a hand over her face tiredly. She's just tired of everything and everyone. She picks her phone and sends Fatima a message.
Teemah I'm sorry you feel like that. If only you had picked my call. Anyways, I wanted to tell you something about Amal but I guess I'll let her tell you herself. Maybe that would be better. And also, please don't tell anyone about my pregnancy. I haven't even told mummy about it so please. This should be one of our various secrets. Don't forget, I love you so much and if I were man, i wouldn't think twice before eloping with you to marry you. Don't let anyone's thoughts get to you okay. Byee.
Halima drops her phone, the blood in her bile long forgotten as she falls asleep as she's suddenly feeling tired.
Sa'eed pries his eyes open. The place is dark and he can't see a thing. He lays down, waiting for his eyes to adjust to the darkness first. Once his eyes adjust, he sees the light switch and he touches it making the lights come on. Where is he?
He notices the room theme, milk and tangerine. That's the theme of his room back in his parent's house. He looks around and surely, it's his room. But how did he get here? He takes a bath and changes into one of the sweats in his wardrobe.
He walks out of the room and the captivating scent of something - definitely baked - hits his nose. He remembers Halima. Where is she now? How is she? Numerous questions run through his mind. He knows everything he did to her. Every single thing. He didn't do it intentionally but the deed has been done. If only he will be able to meet her and apologize.
He walks into the kitchen and sees something - definitely eatable - dripping with milk from a rack. Two small cute warmers sit on the kitchen counter and a small cake sits there being cooled. His stomach growls and he grabs a stool then sits on it front of the counter. He takes two of the milk dripping thingy and place them on a plate. He cuts a piece of the cake and surprisingly, there are balls of chocolate in the center.
