Chapter 9: Try outs

Vanessa POV:

The day started like any other. I got up, got ready for school and drove my motorcycle to school. I had the first 3 periods with Daniel, Cole and Tyler. The first few periods went by faster than I expected. I was anxious for the try outs

It was now lunch time and as always, I was sitting at our usual table with the boys. It's been a few weeks since school started and each day the girls give me dirty looks whenever I'm hanging with the boys but I couldn't care less.

"So, V are you excited for the try outs?" asked Tyler

"Try outs?" asked Daniel with a confused look on his face

"yes, Tyler convinced me to try out for track and field again. The try outs are after school" I said distressed that Daniel was going to be upset I didnt tell me sooner.

"YESSSS!" Daniel literally yelled at the top of his lungs causing everyone to look toward our table

"Quiet Danny, you are causing people to look. Sit down please" I begged looking around to see everyone staring at Daniel as if he is crazy

"Tyler, I literally love you to the moon and back. I tried convincing her but nothing worked. I don't know what you did but whatever it was it worked and I love you for it" Daniel said

"All I did was talk to her, I guess my charm convinced her" he said with a smirk on his face

"We'll definitely be there" I heard Michael say with a smile on his face

"No please" I said nervously. I didnt want them to be there, what if I dont make it or embarrass myself

"You have no choice Smith. We have to be there anyways" laughed Cole

"You dont have to be there. you can just go home" I said

"We have football practice after school, and we share the field so we will watch you" repeated Alex.

"And plus even if we didn't we would still go and watch" Mason said

"Why, track and field is so boring. and there I nothing to watch anyways" I said trying to convinced them not to go

"Track and field isn't boring and there is something to watch. YOU" Cole said

"Dammit" I said

"Danny what if I freeze again?" I whispered to Daniel so non of the boys could hear

"You'll do well Nessa, don't worry about it" he said trying to cheer me up a little

School came to an end fast. I was now in the girls locker room getting change. I got my normal running shoes, and I got my dark blue Puma running Spikes. My aunt bought them for me at my 17-birthday hoping that I would wear them but never did till today. I picked up my starting blocks and made my way to the field.

"Miss Diaz" I said

"Vanessa, I'm glad you made it, please get started with your usual warm up and I'll call you over in a few" she said

I started with 2 laps around the field as warm up and after that I did some exercise to make sure that my muscles are warm.

What is I do freeze?

What if I have a mental breakdown?

I don't want to have to explain to the boys everything

Vanessa you'll be fine, just run I thought to myself

"Vanessa please!" I heard Miss Diaz calling me bringing me out of my deep thoughts

I jogged to her and saw that she was talking to a girl. She was about my height, she was very pale, she had blond shoulder length hair.

"Vanessa meet Asher" Miss Diaz announced pointing at the Blond girl

"Hey" is all I could say

"Girls!" Miss Diaz yelled, and all the other girls jogged toward us. There were about 8 girls.

"The boys are busy with there 200m start practice. Vanessa is trying out, and if she is good enough not only, she will start training with us but she will automatically join our relay team. We are going to do 100m today. Vanessa you are going to run in line 2 and Asher you in line 4. Smith your job here is to stay as close as you can or pass her if you can" She explained

"As if!" I heard the Asher girl whisper

As if? girl please you never seen me run. You will be eating dust today

this girl is starting to annoy me already

We mad our way to the 100m start and I saw all the boys sitting at the grass and watching as like vultures.

I shake my head and try to ignore them.

"Girls on your marks, get set, GO!" yelled miss Diaz from the finish line, loud enough for Asher and I to hear her.

The second I heard her yell GO my legs left the Starting blocks with so much power causing them to move a bit back. For the first few meters I kept my head down and when I finally lifted my head up Asher and I were head-to-head. I focused on my arms and picking up my knees. I ran faster than I could ever imagine and just like that I crossed the finish line. I was so focused on working on my arms and legs that I didnt notice if Asher had come first or not.

I was focused on trying to prove Asher wrong that I completely forgot about everything else around me, which is good because I was afraid I was going to freeze when its time to run but I didn't.

That's a step forward

I turned around to see Asher behind me. She didnt say a word but instead walked toward Miss Diaz and so did I.

"Smith" I heard miss Diaz say

"Yes coach" I replied out of breath

"That was breath taking" she cheered with a huge smile on her face

"It sure was, I feel as if Im going to pass out" I replied as a joke

"You're on the team, well-done Smith!" she announced

And just like that I was part of the high school track and field team as well as Asher's enemy.
