Whispers of the past (Hunter x Hunter fanfiction)

Chapter 5

There was a huge cloud of smoke and I couldn't see a thing. A few seconds later I managed to make out the shape of an old man. 

"The chairman of the selection committee." Menchi spoke. "He's in charge of the hunter exam... Chairman Netero."

"Well, I work behind the scenes. I only take action when there's an issue, like now." The man replied. 'I don't like this man.' I thought.

"So, Menchi-kun..." He continued.

"Yes sir." She answered him.

"You failed all of thee applicants because you disapproved of their reluctance to try new things?" He said. 'Man, we're dealing with a pervert here. I can't watch this.'

I walked to the back and stood behind Kurapika. He turned around and looked at me.

"Is everything okay, Aiko?" He asked me worriedly. I nodded. He smiled then turned around.

I only listened to the important part: We're retaking this phase! The news almost made me jump of happiness. I have another chance! We were on an airship to Mt. Split-in-half, and it was just like its name: Split in half. We saw what I believe was "spider eagle webs". Yeah, I think I read about that before as well. We looked down. The wind blew my purple hair back. 

"Look below the web." We did as Menchi said. "Those are... Those are spider eagle eggs. Spider eagles build their webs in deep ravines, to protect their eggs from predators. This makes their eggs one of the most difficult ingredients to obtain."

"Their eggs are also known as dream eggs." Netero-san said.

"W-Wait a minute! You don't mean we..." Todo concluded.

"I sure do!" Menchi exclaimed.

"What?!" Todo's mouth dropped. Menchi jumped down and we all watched as she was hanging on to the web. People kept making comments such as "She'll die!" or "Is she trying to get herself killed?".

"No..." I said to myself. Killua turned to me. "She knows what she's doing. This is probably the only way to get the spider eagle eggs."

Menchi flew back up with an egg in her hands.

"Woah!" Gon exclaimed.

"That sounds fun!" Killua continued. Netero and Menchi were explaining but nobody listened to them. Me, Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio jumped and grabbed the web. People were already jumping... to their deaths. There was no updraft. I can't hear or feel any gusts of wind. 

"Let's go!" Leorio instructed. 

"Not yet." Gon warned.

"Why not?" Leorio asked.

"There's no updraft. We have to wait for it, unless, of course, you want to fall to your death." I explained.

"When's the next one, then?" He asked me. 

"I still can't feel the wind. I'm not so sure." I answered.

"Wait." Gon said. He sniffed the air. I did the same, wondering why he did so. 'I can't smell anything.' The web was ripping because of all the weight on it. 

"What?" Leorio asked.

"The web won't hold us all!" Kurapika sorta answered his question.

"Not yet. We have to wait." I ordered. Many people jumped because the web wouldn't hold their weight. The web ripped even more.

"It's gonna snap!" Leorio shouted. I waited until I felt the smallest gusts of wind.

"Now!" Me and Gon shouted at the same time. We all let go of the web and caught an egg. I was terrified. 'What if I was wrong? What if all my friends die, and because of me? I can survive with my wings, but they can't! Wait, why didn't I simply use my wings?'  Without realizing it, I was flowing upwards rather than falling downwards. I landed on my feet, luckily. I searched around me and found all my friends holding eggs in their hands. I let out a small sigh of relief. Now all we have to do is boil them.

We all ate our boiled eggs. Gon gave some of his egg to Todo, who apologized to Menchi for being rude. I smiled. 'Gon's innocence is too adorable!'

We were soon on the same airship, leaving for phase three.
