Rose could never forget their first meeting.
A tough looking burly man just fell off from the sky. Right in front of her. He crashed to bushes otherwise he would have been hurt badly.
Rose asks, "Are you okay?"
"Damn it! I'm dead. Even met an angel."
He looks so silly as if he believed he was really dead.
Rose bends her body a bit and offers her hand. If she isn't mistaken, this guy is their new neighbor. He and his girlfriend just moved in few days ago.
She helps him to get up.
"Hello, I'm Rose, one of your neighbors."
"Oh, Mike Cornell. Sorry for scaring you."
"Fell from the sky. That's new."
Mike scratches his head. He looks embarrassed. He points to rooftop of a nearby building.
He explains, "Roof is leaking. So I fixed it."
Their neighbor is too poor to pay anyone to fix her roof. She is an old widow with no one else to support her. Usually she gathers up metal trash to change for foods and water.
Rose says, "That's so nice of you."
"We have to help our neighbors."
Rose squints her eyes. She sighs while walking away. A good guy like him won't live long in this chaotic era.
When she got home from finishing a mission, she heard a quarrel.
Lorraine is fussing again for their lack of foods.
"You idiot! You should have gone working instead of helping a useless old woman!"
"I'll go work tomorrow. We would have many foods. No worries."
"I'm so f*cking tired of you! Useless moron!"
Rose shakes her head. Mike must be blinded by love. Lorraine is pretty like a model. Her behaviors fit for a tyrant queen. Always believe men live to serve under her feet.
Two months later, Rose notices Mike is sitting alone in the stairways. His eyes are reddened. His face looks very tired. She has never seen cheerful Mike so downhearted like this.
She asks, "What happened?"
"Lorraine. She cheated on me."
"Mike..."
"I know I'm not good enough for her. She used to be a rich young woman. Second generation. I'm just a farmer."
Rose taps on his broad shoulder.
She says, "Mike, it ain't your fault. You worked hard to feed her. She's the one who is guilty here."
"Thanks. I kinda need to hear those kind words. I better leave right now. A man and a woman shouldn't be together in a place like this."
"Mike, Lorraine is..."
Rose wanted to tell him the truth. That she isn't good enough for him. Lorraine is a selfish queen. She would never change. She has been hooking up with men since they first moved here.
Mike is too busy working. He never knows his girlfriend is cheating behind her back.
Rose knows because Farrah told her. Different men have visited Mike's home during his absence.
