Patti opened her hand and looked at Billy's business card, which showed his direct number.
Elvis won't know where I'll be.
She tore the card, knowing that she was leaving her old belongings in Graceland at her own request. Fortunately, the most valuable thing - an album with family photos was in her suitcase.
The driver was staring at her from the rearview mirror, but when the gates swung open he was greeted by the roar of fans who calmed down a little after seeing that she was not their idol. Patti looked at one of the fan girls who was staring at her, eyes narrowing.
Probably many of them dreamed of spending the night with Elvis, but if such a girl put aside her love for an idol and looked at him as an ordinary man, she would probably regret a rash decision. To be a one time woman - used and left alone is so degrading.
Patti was glad she took this step. It would have been nice to only have Elvis as a friend, but when her gut feeling was right, she knew she had to act. If Elvis is reasonable, they can be friends, but if he is pushy, then unfortunately Patti will have to cut off contact with him.
Even if Elvis tries to impose himself, he must get bored. Everyone gets bored over time, unless it's a stalker.
No, he couldn't be that unreasonable. He's stubborn, he may want to contact me at first, but he'll probably quit later. It would be logical.
When they reached the city center, Patti asked the driver to stop. Since Elvis had paid for her course, she got out with the suitcase in her hand. The taxi left and Patti was alone. First time alone in Memphis. She saw that there was a telephone box nearby, so she went there. Once inside, she pulled out a piece of paper with Rhonda's phone number and dialed the number.
A man answered.
—Hello?
—Hi — Patti began. —Is Rhonda there?
—Yes, and who is speaking?
—Her friend. Could you please ask her, sir?
—Of course — the guy agreed, and Patti heard him calling for Rhonda. When she came over she asked:
—Hello? Who says?
—It's me, Patti Lange.
—Pat — Rhonda was concerned. —Is something wrong?
—In a way — Patti sighed. —I had to quit Graceland. Can I stay with you for one day? Please...
—Has Elvis done something to you?— Rhonda asked. —Is he ... you know.
—No, but we had an argument.
—Pat, listen, where are you? I will pick you up.
—I don't want to make a problem, I can walk, it's not far ...
