Revolution in the Night | Chapter Twenty Five

The streets of Paris were eerily quiet. It was as if the whole city was holding its breath.

Adélie had never seen the city empty. It felt like a ghost town.

Only a few beggars wandered the dark alleyways, and Adélie felt a shiver run down her spine as she checked her side to ensure she had still had the pistol. The city made her nervous when it was crowded, but something about it being this empty felt even more terrifying. She was technically a fugitive, and she would be far more easier to find in these empty streets. But there was also something freeing about being dressed as a man in Paris. She felt as if she could do anything. She had so few rights as a woman, especially of her class. She didn't have to feel as afraid while she walked the streets looking like this.

As she approached the centre of the city, she heard a faint noise, growing louder as she got closer.

The marching of soldiers. It sounded like a stampede, but each footstep was in sync with each other, echoing throughout the still streets and alleyways of Paris.

She followed the sound, which continued to grow louder as she approached the square. Though she was in disguise, she couldn't help but feel nervous about seeing Enjolras. Would he recognise her? And just how angry would he be when he found out she had come?

She rounded the corner of an alleyway towards the square, nearly running directly into a police officer, a young girl in his arms, obviously struggling against him as his hands ran up and down her body.

Adélie's stomach twisted, the girl's eyes meeting hers as tears rolled down her cheeks, pleading her for help as she tried to push the man from her. Adélie knew she should just ignore them. Now was not the time to get involved in something like this.

But still, she saw the fear in that girl's eyes, the same fear she had felt when Dumont's hands were on her. She had been in her place before. She couldn't turn away from her. She had to do something.

Adélie didn't know what came over her, but she mustered up every ounce of courage she had, and marched straight towards them, lifting her pistol to the man's forehead, her hand shaking as she lifted her finger to the trigger.

"Let her go."

She tried to make her voice sound like a man's, more gruff and intimidating than her normal voice, but instead it came out shaky and high pitched. Though, her grip on the gun didn't falter, and the officer pulled away from the girl only slightly, his hand still gripping her arm.

"Who do you think you are?" The officer spoke roughly, a smirk on his face as he squeezed the girl's arm tighter, causing her to whimper, terrified. "Remember your place, boy."

She was risking everything doing this. The officer would remember her face. She was already in trouble, and now she was only adding to her list of crimes.

"I said, let. Her. Go." Adélie gritted through her teeth, swallowing as the man pulled his hand from the girl, who hurried behind Adélie, tripping on her skirt and falling into the dirty pathway. The man reached for his gun on his side, but Adélie's grip held firm on her own gun.
