Sorry this chapter is a good bit shorter than normal ones! My mom and I got in a fight today, so she's taking my internet away for a while O_O I wanted to make sure I got a chapter out before I lost it indefinitely. Hopefully you guys still enjoy it even though it's a little short!

The next morning, the girls woke up to the sound of one of their phones ringing. Both opened their eyes groggily, trying to rub the sleep out of them. Annie smacked her hand around on her nightstand searching for her phone while Mikasa slowly sat up to look for hers.
"It's mine," Mikasa told Annie when she found her ringing phone.
"Answer it, so it will shut up," Annie groaned as she turned her head to try to go back to sleep.
When Mikasa answered the phone, she was met by the frantic, teary voice of her adoptive mother. "Mikasa? Mikasa?" she asked worriedly.
"Yes, I'm here," Mikasa deadpanned in a tired voice.
"Thank god!" Carla exclaimed, and Mikasa heard the few tears she let out, "I thought something awful happened!"
"I'm fine," Mikasa assured her, putting a hand on the wound on her head.
"Where are you?" Carla asked. Mikasa heard the jingling of keys in the background before hearing Carla's voice, "I'll come pick you up."
"I'm at Annie's," Mikasa assured her as she glanced over at the blonde who'd fallen back asleep.
"Usually I'd be happy for you, but right now, I'm too angry for that," Carla said, now seeming more angry than sad.
"Angry?" Mikasa asked worriedly.
"I'm about to unleash the devil on you when I see you," Carla promised as Mikasa heard the car start up before the line went silent.
"Shit shit shit shit," Mikasa cursed as she got out of bed and stuffed her phone in her pocket.
I could run, but that'd only make her more angry, Mikasa thought frantically, even if I did run, where would I go. Shit. She's gonna be here soon, no doubt.
She heard the ringing of the doorbell, and Mikasa grunted as she ran to answer it before her mother woke the house. Her mother was aggressively pressing the button over and over again, and Mikasa knew she was going to get her ear chewed off.
When she opened the door, Carla growled while grabbing her daughter by the ear and pulling her out to the car. Mikasa closed the door behind her, complaining as her mother dragged her along.
"Get in the car," Carla said as she threw Mikasa into the door by her ear.
"Yes ma'am," Mikasa said sarcastically as she got in the car.
"Why the hell didn't you come home?" Carla asked as she buckled up and turned the car on.
"I told Annie I'd meet her after work," Mikasa said, "I ended up falling asleep there I guess."
Technically, it wasn't a lie. She did say she was going to spend time with Annie after school, and she did fall asleep. She just left out that they'd planned Mikasa spending the night.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Carla raged.
"I guess I just forgot," Mikasa explained, "I'm sorry."
"This isn't over," Carla said when she parked the car outside their house. She turned to point an accusatory finger at Mikasa, but her eyes widened as they took in all the bruises. "What the hell?" she asked as she grabbed Mikasa by the chin, inspecting her injuries.
