"Lin, give it back!"
Toph tried to keep her daughters from each other's throats, but twelve-year-old Lin continued to instigate and six-year-old Suyin never realised that her older sister was trying to rile her up. "Girls, stop fighting!"
"Mom, tell Suyin that she's being annoying!"
"Mom, tell Lin to give the flower back!"
Flower? That's what they were arguing over? Toph sighed, exasperated, and she went to grab her daughters when someone approached the three.
"Excuse me?" The voice startled Toph. From what she could tell, the stranger was a woman around Toph's age and her voice was what Toph would describe as gorgeous. "Would you mind if I helped?"
Toph almost denied, but a hand rested gingerly on her shoulder and she felt her face flush a bit. The woman whispered so only Toph could hear her, "My nieces fight often, so I would be more than happy to help you. I know how difficult girls can be, especially if they're close in age and want attention."
"Are you insulting me? That I don't give enough attention to my daughters?"
The woman chuckled and Toph swore that her heart stopped for a few moments. Toph carefully watched the woman's weight shift as she crouched down to the girls.
"Hello, ladies. What are your names?"
Both girls were a bit apprehensive, but the woman smiled kindly anyways. "Well, my name is (Y/N). My sister and I used to walk here before it was the City, and now she and her daughters walk here as well."
Suyin looked up at the woman in awe while Lin still wore her stoic glower. The woman—(Y/N)—took a flower in her hand and almost as soon as she touched it, it began to grow at her fingertips. Suyin gasped and Lin'seyes widened.
"Do that again!" Suyin held the flower that she snatched back from Lin out to (Y/N) in anticipation. (Y/N) chuckled again and took the flower gently, kneeling just in front of the little girl.
She cupped the flower, fingertips brushing the barely-bloomed petals that started to sprout as soon as her touch danced across them. "Waterbending isn't as interesting as earthbending, in my opinion. Can either of you girls earthbend?"
As Suyin and Lin questioned the woman (Suyin more so than Lin,) Toph sat a few metres away from the trio and smiled when her youngest daughter laughed and her eldest sat on the ground. (Y/N) was speaking softly, her weight now shifted to a sitting position rather than kneeling.
