Witches: The Battle Against Darkness

Jyla

Jyla tossed from one side of the bed to the other. She couldn't sleep not after what happened today. She currently lives with her foster parents; Hannah and David Ren. She loves them and they love her too. Jyla spent all her life in foster homes but after staying with Hannah and David for three years now, she could really call it home.

Jyla has always hated school. She just felt like she didn't belong there. She was supposed to resume at her new school in the last semester of junior year but she got sick so she had home classes. She wanted to be as invisible as possible so she put on the nerd look. Big round glasses, heavy bag pack and dull colored sweaters. She knew she could get picked on but there's a bigger chance of not being seen.

Today was her first day. She surprising liked it. Nobody took notice of her for almost the whole day. She was doing fine until she met...her. The girl was a bit taller than her, had brown eyes and wavy dark brown hair. Jyla could tell that something was different about her. She heard several people calling her Via and then during P.E, Coach Bee called her Hegens. Via Hegens.

After she saw Via in the hallways, she got distracted and bumped into a guy. She apologized with her head down and picked her books. The boy chuckled and started hitting her head. She endured the whole bully thing even though it seemed ridiculous to her. She was great at keeping her cool but her body made an instant reaction when he tapped her ass. She slapped him hard on the face. He was going to hit her back when a teacher called, "Hey! You two! There will be no fighting in the hallways!" It was the teacher from the class Via just walked out of, "I will see you both in detention".

Jyla couldn't protest. She just ran to her first class. All her classes went by and soon, it was detention hour. She grabbed a seat at the end of the classroom, not wanting to draw any attention. She got distracted from her homework when a repeat of what happened to her was being done to Via. She wanted to voice out because of what Hannah taught her about doing the right thing but she didn't know the girl and they'd just pick on them both.

The strangest thing happened next. She knew something was different about Via. Via wasn't human. She had a reddish orange glow in her eyes. Jyla quickly hid under the desk. She watched as all the others dangled in the air while struggling to breathe. The orange sparks from her hand carried all the desks leaving Jyla exposed but luckily, Via didn't notice her. In a flash, everything went back to normal except the confused students on the floor.

Jyla has never seen anything like that in her entire life. Magic is real? Was her first thought. Her mind was running in search of a logic conclusion. She waited for everyone to leave so that she could sneak off to the library and do some research. She noticed that Via stayed back too. She packed her bag quietly and followed her. Via looked from left to right before she entered the locker room. Jyla paused to keep the distance between them. She too entered the locker room but no one was there. It was like Via had vanished into thin air.

That's what's keeping Jyla's mind from drifting off to sleep. She couldn't understand anything. And worst of all, she was part of the strangeness. Everyone else looked like they couldn't remember anything she thought but why did she still have her memories of what happened? Her self questioning time was cut short.

Her door creaked open. Her room was dark, the windows were shut and the closet was closed. There was no way it was the wind. "Hello?" She called out, "anybody there? Hannah? David?" No answer. The door slammed shut all of a sudden but creaked open again. Jyla hated this because she was scared. She knows stuff like this happens in scary movies but those are movies.

She crawled out of bed quietly. She tiptoed to the door, sucking her breath in. She opened the door fully but there was no one. "Hannah?" She repeated. No answer. She heard a creaking sound from behind her. She walked backwards inside the room and locked the front door. She turned around slowly still trying to keep her breathing quiet.

She moved to the closet. Before her head could survey the room, a hand clapped on her mouth. She let out a yelp. She was terrified but that didn't stop her from struggling out of the person's grip. "Hold still" the person grunted. Jyla pressed her fingernails into the person's thigh and closed her eyes. She was holding the tears in.

Suddenly, she felt free. She was confused but relieved. She sighed and turned around wanting to just drop on the bed. She put her hand against her mouth to hold the scream. On the floor laid a brown toad. It stared at her intensely with its black eyes. Jyla felt crazy. She knew it was a person who held her. Humans don't just turn to toads right? She asked herself. At this point, she wasn't far from insanity.

She picked up the creature and threw it out the window. She switched on the light of her bathroom and she rushed to the sink. She scrubbed her soft hands furiously with the bar soap. She wasn't satisfied with it since the image disturbed her greatly. She emptied her wonderful chicken and pizza dinner into the toilet bowl. At this stage, she was totally uncomfortable with herself so the next option was a shower.

The cold water helped her calm down. She tied her wet hair as she slipped into fresh pajamas. She walked back to the sink area to get her toothpaste from the cabinet. She let the scream her lungs have been holding in loose as she stared at her reflection of a girl with purple eyes.

Q: What is the craziest thing you have ever imagined yourself doing?

A: For a long time, I used to imagine myself dangling upside down on a rollercoaster track as people still had rides. 🤪I am one crazy child!
