JylaThe ray of sunshine from her curtainless window shone on her face. Jyla still had her hands wrapped around her legs. She had curled up into a ball to sleep. Last night haunted her. She didn't even know when she fell asleep. She slapped her alarm clock and yawned. Her pillow felt damp. She was too worried to dry her hair.
She stretched a little before opening the front door. Hannah was just about to knock. "You're awake", she smiled, "good morning". "Good morning, Hannah" Jyla yawned. "Whoa! Looks like someone's not fully awake". Hannah chuckled. "Well, I couldn't get much sleep. I kept thinking about this girl in my class who has magic powers and then someone tried to kidnap me but later he or she turned into a toad and my eyes changed to purple..." She blurted.
When she noticed that Hannah looked bewildered, she chuckled nervously. "That...erm... was the dream I...I kept having", she said, "yeah, it messed my mind". "Did you watch a scary movie again?" Hannah frowned. This is my escape! Jyla thought. "Yes. Yes, I did", she sighed, "I just thought since I'm a senior now, I can handle it". Hannah hugged her and kissed her hair, "you don't have to prove anything, sweetie", she said, "and if you ever feel scared, my door is always opened".
Jyla pulled away and smiled. She entered the bathroom and locked the door. She pulled her eyelids up several times to check the color. Her eyes were normal. She sighed in relief as she opened the cabinet to get the toothpaste. Just like last night, she screamed as the purple returned. "Jy, you okay?" Hannah asked knocking on the door. "Yeah! I'm good", Jyla said awkwardly, "I just squirt some toothpaste in my eyes. It stings but I'll wash it off. No need to worry". "You sure?" She confirmed. "Yes" Jyla finally said.
She looked back at the reflection. She was astounded by the dark shade. "This cannot be good". She muttered to herself. Her whole body felt funny. Her knees acted like jelly and she was leaning on the sink to stand. Her hands started shaking and she could see purple sparks coming out of it. She moved her hands as she inspected it. "What the hell!" She was still in shock. She wiggled her hands thinking she could shake off the sparks.
Her hands aimed for the curtain of the shower. A purple looking ball hit the material and it caught fire. She wanted to scream again but she didn't want to get Hannah's attention. She fetched water from the sink and poured it. She did this repeatedly until the fire was out. She sighed in relief as she sat on the tiled floor. The purple sparks were gone from her hands but that didn't stop her from feeling its powers.
She reluctantly took a bath and got dressed for school. She wore black mitts to cover her hand. Like that could stop the magic. She coupled that with a long sleeve gray sweater and faded jeans. She wanted to be totally invisible today, not because she hated school but because she felt insecure and dangerous. All her life, she was normal but now, she's something else.
She was quiet the whole morning which made Hannah and David worried but they voted against asking her about it. She is a teenager after all and being the new kid has never been easy on anyone. She didn't even wave them goodbye as she got down the car. Jyla wasn't happy that she was being cold towards the only people that really cared about her but she didn't want to hurt them. She couldn't trust herself with her new abilities.
She sat absentmindedly throughout the first period. When she entered the next class, she was forced to introduce herself. "Ah" the History teacher smiled, "we have a new student. Please, introduce yourself". "H-hey, I'm Jyla Ren". She avoided eye contact with anyone. "Well, nice to meet you, Miss Ren". He said. "Thanks". She was about to walk to her seat when the teacher called out a student. "Via Hegens! I hope you don't mind", he said, "but can you take the empty seat at the back while Jyla stays in front?" "No problem" Via answered with no enthusiasm.
Jyla's heart skipped at the mention of Via's name. She was like Via now. The class too went by and so did the others. Jyla rushed to the gym. This time she didn't see Via there. She let out the breath she has been holding all day. Minutes after, the door opened forcefully. The idiot and his friends that got her detention strolled in. "Well. Well. Well. Look who we have here?" The guy smirked, "if it isn't the slapping bitch?" She decided to ignore him and fix her eyes to the ground instead.
"What's wrong?" The guy pulled her chin so that she could face him, "cat cut your tongue?" She pushed him and whispered, "leave me alone" "Aw dude! She's getting physical already!" One of his buddies called out. "You know if you want to touch me", he lowered his voice, "I have the perfect place. We can both get pleasure after it". Jyla was sure she barfed in her mouth. She stood up and attempted to walk out but he pulled her making her crash into his chest. "There's no one here", the boy wore a smug smile, "I can go fast and hard".
Jyla pushed him again. "Leave me alone!" She gritted her teeth. One of the guys puts his leg in her way and she tripped landing painfully on her elbow. She held the spot and groaned on the floor. "That sound is a freaking turn on". He pulled her up with her hair. Jyla couldn't hold her discomfort anymore. She pushed him but this time, she had purple sparks flying out her hand and the guy had landed meters away.
The other guy that spoke cursed and rushed with his fist at her. Jyla put her hands in an X to protect her face. When she didn't get the impact, she removed her hands slowly and saw that the guy had flown away too. The remaining two rushed to the corner where the dodge balls were kept. "Take this creep!" They shouted as the balls came flying at her. She waved her hands and turned her head to avoid any hits on her face.
Suddenly someone grabbed her from the back. The image of last night played in her head. Jyla closed her eyes and clenched her fists. She was panting heavily and tears were in her eyes. She revealed her purple eyes to the boys who where all on the floor holding there heads. She didn't understand what she was doing to them and she couldn't stop it. "Jyla!" The call distracted her.
She snapped her head to the left to meet Via. "Stay away from me!" She yelled. Via walked slowly. "It's alright, Jyla", her voice was soft, "I know what you're going through". "You don't! I'm a freak!" Jyla was frustrated. "You're not a freak", Via assured her, "you're a witch. I'm a witch too. I just want to help". "I want to be alone!" Jyla hugged herself making sobbing sounds. "I can do that". Via made a portal and she stretched her hands like she was pushing it. The portal carried all the boys and disappeared.
Jyla hiccupped her tears. This was too much to take in. Witch? She couldn't believe it. They were only in movies and novels. Via was only five feet from her now. "You need to breathe and calm down". Via encouraged. "I can't! I don't know how to!" Jyla confessed as she resumed crying, "I almost killed them!" "But you didn't" Via added sharply, "and if you don't calm down, some people will come and kill you". Jyla closed her eyes and took a huge breath. It was too late though as they turned their heads to the loud footsteps heading their way.
Long but totally worth it! Not bad for their first conversation.
Don't start thinking of a ship name for them! They will not be a couple!
I know that's kinda spoiler alert but you guys tend to start having funny ideas.
