"So, how are we all feeling?" Mike walked into the changing room. His question was met with a few anxious smiles and nods but no one said anything. "Now, most of you have never played together in your life, so just go out there, and have some fun."
"Fun? We're here to impress the women's coach." Zoe said, confused; she took everything so seriously, but then this was her career on the line, I supposed.
"I know Zoe, but you won't get anywhere if you're trying too hard to win. Just enjoy yourselves."
"Mike's right." A voice said, and her body emerged through the door of the changing room.
"Molly? What are you doing here?" Zoe asked, confused as to why Molly had suddenly shown up again.
"I asked Duncan for my old job back, he said yes, so I guess I'm back for good now." She shrugged, and behind her Mike looked disappointed. I guessed that he was annoyed he'd be back to her assistant, if he was.
"Perrie saw me the other day." Molly said, gesturing to me slumped against the wall of the changing room on my new phone.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Zoe asked, and I just shrugged in response. I knew that the game was important to her, but I couldn't have cared less about it to be honest. I was convincing myself more and more that I didn't want a career in football, but I still wasn't sure.
As we got ready for the game, putting shin pads on and tying hair up, I saw Kat reach into her bag for something, only to pull out her missing necklace pendant, which she had so ardently searched for the past few weeks.
"My pendant!" She exclaimed, but then her face changed in a split second, as if she had just realised something."You finally found it Kat! It must have just got caught in the lining or something." Zoe said, pointing to the bag.
"More like someone put it there." She said, giving Zoe a cold glare; Zoe edged away from Kat, looking nervous.
"Come on everyone: time to show them what you all can do." Molly said, clapping her hands together as we stood up and exited the changing room onto the pitch."Zoe! Over here!" I yelled, willing her to kick the ball to me, but something was off between her and Kat: probably something about the pendant. I had no idea if Zoe was the one who stole it, but Kat obviously did, even if Zoe kept denying it. It was nearly half time and Jack's team were nailing it; it was a miracle we were only two down. Even I was starting to get frustrated. At one point I put in a good cross to Zoe, only for someone to intercept her and dart down the wings. We hadn't even had any free kicks, in fact we were the ones giving away the fouls.
I saw Zoe and Kat glaring at each other between goals and breaks in the game, their eyes boring holes in the opposites' skull. I found myself often getting distracted by Freddie and Aisha's commentary which was hilarious.
When the whistle finally blew to signal half time, we sulked towards the changing rooms looking defeated, while Jack's team was so far triumphing. I glimpsed Karen sat next to a young woman in the stands: Gerry Seddon: the Hawkstone coach. Well she wasn't going to be impressed by our performance.
