After the party, I went straight home, thinking about what Archie Royle had said. How could he know? I walked down to breakfast the next day, still overthinking it. I didn't know exactly what he had meant, and if he knew, why hadn't he told anyone?
"Are you alright, Pez?" Dillon said, as I sat down dreamily on the
I looked up from my daydream, "Huh? Yeah I'm fine."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, I promise." I muttered.
After breakfast, we wandered down to training, Liam tagging along. When we got to the club, instead of everyone outside already training, the pitches were empty.
"Where is everyone?" I wondered aloud. Everywhere was deadly silent.
"Dunno. The Under-13s are in the cage though." Dillon spotted, and I glimpsed the whole team lounging around on the ground, looking as if they were waiting for someone. Liam ran over after saying goodbye to us.
We headed into the cafe, where we found the whole of the team, including Jamie, Boggy and Ruby.
"Wasn't expecting to see you here Jamie." Dillon said as we sat down amongst everyone, me still trying to avoid Jamie, as I felt his eyes on me.
"Mike made me come. None of us know what this is about, Duncan just told us to come in here." Jamie replied, looking bored and not trying to hide the fact that he really didn't want to be there.
Dillon nodded, just as Duncan walked in.
"Okay everyone, settle down." he said.
Everyone silenced, waiting to hear what was going on.
"Me and Mike want to give you the day off. After your win in the final last week, we think you deserve a break."
"Are you serious?" Dillon said, looking excited.
"Yep, go and have fun at the beach."
"The beach?!" Someone yelled, which was met with cheers all around.
"Go home. Get your things, and meet down at the beach. Enjoy yourselves." Duncan said with a smile, and he wandered off outside.
About an hour later, we ran onto the beach in the sun.
"What about training?" Zoe said as I walked along side her. We found a spot and set our things down behind a patch of rocks to protect us from the breeze.
"Are you and Kat still trying to get scouted by the Hawkstone coach?" I asked.
"Yeah, she said she was going to come to the Final, but didn't, and now look what she's posting." she handed me her phone, showing a post on Instagram from Gerry Seddon, the women's coach.
I read aloud, "'Setting up the new Hawkstone team is proving to be a challenge, finding local talent is difficult.'"
I handed back the phone, my emotions obvious on my face.
"I know right? She can't say that if she can't even be bothered to watch us play." Zoe sat down, obviously not enjoying the start of the day.
After 10 minutes of sunbathing, I looked up to see a group of people approaching us from the distance. As they approached, their faces became clearer: the Under-13s including Eric's friend i'd seen around the club, Aisha.
"What are you lot doing here?" Alba yelled through the wind, her voice just reaching us from a distance.
"What are we doing here?" Dillon repeated, confused. "Duncan gave us the day off. What are you doing here?" Dillon asked.
