Chapter 2: Memories
"C'mon, c'mon!" Jack shouted in the distance. He flung open a worn out door, and yanked in his two best friends, Ella and Little Red. Jack was now dressed in expensive clothes, the best golden eggs can buy.
Ella, or rather Princess Cinderella was actually dressed rather plain for royalty, yet clothed in the finest fabrics. It was the prince's day off, so Char tagged along too. Little Red's birthday just passed, which meant a brand new red cape. They all had returned to Jack's old cottage for a visit.
"My goodness, you all are fast!" The village's now top baker tried to catch up. His wife wasn't far behind. She took little Andrew's hand.
"C'mon, Andy," she laughed. "Let's catch up to the others."
Andrew, already looking like the age of three, grinned. "Don't wry, Mum. I run."
They all gathered in the room. Jack looked around. Suddenly, he stumbled on something. He looked down to see the magic book, dull and lifeless on the floor. He picked it up and blew off the dust covering it.
"It's been a long time since I dared to read this."
Everyone listened as Jack opened the book. But on the first page was a different story.
"Oh I remember reading this the first time I found it. It's called 'Les Misérables'. In other words, it means 'The Miserable' in French."
Little Red looked perplexed. "And how did you know that?"
"The book told me." Jack acted like this was normal to everyone else. "It's very sad, yet meaningful. But anyway. Do you want to read on?"
Ella smiled warmly. "Anything you want to do."
Jack grinned and began,
"Once upon a time, there lived a humbled prisoner, a penniless mother, a mistreated child, a dutiful officer-" Jack stopped.
"What's wrong?" The baker's wife grew concerned.
"I don't know," Jack looked a bit confused. "The next words, they weren't there before... I must have forgotten."
He continued, "...and a band of heroines who will change the story into more than just a dream..." Jack flipped the page. Everyone gasped.
The next page looked as if it had been through, well, everything. From the burnt scars, it seemed to have survived a fire. Faint colorful letters and numbers were scattered all over it. Even stranger, there were patches of emerald green glitter here and there.
Dear Reader, can you figure out what adventures await these characters? Or should I say, musicals?
In the very center, a tiny torn hole began to glow. It expanded rapidly, glowing brighter. However, before anyone had a chance to react, everyone was pulled into the book.
