"Time to wake up."
I groaned loudly since I was even more tired than before I fell asleep. I opened my eyes. My head hurt like hell and I felt like I was going to throw up.
Which I did.
"Oh my god not in the car...!" yelled Happy desperately and covered his eyes.
"I'm so sorry." I mumbled and wiped my mouth with my hand.
"It's... fine. It's not even my car but ... just get out." he sighed and left the car.
I was lucky that I didn't throw up on my clothes since I really didn't want to walk around the airport with the unpleasant stains and smell on me.
I stepped out of the car. Happy gave me my rucksack. I smiled gratefully and sighed relieved. I thought I left it at the bar but apparently he took it before we left.
He took one last look inside the car. I swear I could see his eyes tear up slightly but he would never admit it.
I felt bad but at the same time ... he should've seen it coming.
It took another hour till we got on a plane. The plane was half empty.
Happy was sitting at the row behind me so I had a whole row for myself.
"Hi. Yes I found her. We are on a plane so we should be home in around 12 hours."
I slightly turned my head. Happy was talking on the phone quietly, probably about me, probably with Tony. I didn't want to talk to him right now so I closed my eyes.
"She's... okay now. Yes she was alone. Yes I'm sure..."
I opened one eye to secretly look at Happy. He seemed frustrated and tired.
"Just a second..."
I quickly closed my eye again since he stood up to, at least that's what I assumed, give me the phone.
"... sorry but she fell asleep." Happy continued. I could hear in his voice that he knew that I was just pretending.
I heard him sit down again. "I will call when we get there. How many times do I have to tell you this?! Yes I am 100% sure that she was alone!" then he hung up.
I was exhausted but I couldn't fall asleep so I decided to watch a movie. I ended up watching three Harry Potter movies before I finally went back to the peaceful state of sleep.
It felt like less than a minute when I had to leave the plane. It was way too fast to get home already.
"Happy I'm hungry." I said, turned my head and looked at him with puppy eyes.
At first he tried to ignore it but he couldn't. This method always worked and looks like it always will.
"What do you wanna get?" he sighed as he kept his focus on the road.
I thought for a moment. "Cheeseburger. Make it two."
"What's with you Starks and cheeseburgers." he rolled his eyes.
I ended up getting three cheeseburgers, cause you know. You only live once.
"I thought we were going to my brother's place." I narrowed my eyebrows when I realised he took the unexpected turn.
"It's new ... you will see."
"Wow so secretive..." I rolled my eyes as I took another bite.
He waited for me to finish my cheeseburgers and then he tried to start a conversation.
"So... what was that about?" he asked while he kept most of his focus on the road.
I raised my eyebrows. "What was what about?"
"How did you end up ... in that bar ... in that ... condition...?" he tried way too hard when he could just ask directly. I would reply the same way anyway.
"I was having a bad day." I replied casually.
"You've had bad days before and none of them ended like that."
I sighed and ran fingers through my hair. "I just ... I wanted to go back home." I explained. Which wasn't exactly a lie.
Happy narrowed his eyebrows. "You know that you could've just called and we would sort it out?" he said suspiciously. Like he knew I wasn't telling him everything.
There was no way that I was going to tell him anything about Bucky. No one knew that I saw him and it was better to keep it this way.
Maybe one day the world will forget about the Winter Soldier and he will be free to live a simple, peaceful life.
Without even realising it, a small smile appeared on my face.
It faded away as soon as I realised that I won't be a part of it. That I'll never get to be with him again.
After him, will I ever be able to feel love again?
"Happy..." I said quietly and looked at him. "... why do I always fail?"
He didn't reply immediately. "What do you mean?"
I thought for a moment and took a deep breath. "Everything I do ... it never works out. School, job ... relationships... whatever I do ... it ends up bad. I always complain about it, but honestly, if I didn't have Tony ..." I shook my head and rubbed my eyes.
I didn't know how to explain what I was feeling, but it was killing me. I wanted to get it out but I didn't know how to.
Once again Happy stayed quiet. Soon he stopped the car and we just sat there in silence for a few minutes.
"Tony saves my stupid ass every single time, yet I still treat him ... badly. He's there for me even when I push him away. Which honestly happens all the time. Why can't I just realise that I need him?" I said and looked at Happy.
"Please say something cause right now I feel like I'm talking to myself." I added.
He was right about to speak up when someone knocked on the car window.
I stared at Happy for a few more seconds, hoping that he's going to ignore the knocking just like I was planning to do.
Which didn't happen so I turned around to see who it was. I rolled the window down.
"Welcome back adventure girl." said Nat smiling and nodded to Happy as a greeting.
I didn't expect to see her. Not at all.
I looked through the window in confusion, only to realise that I had no clue where were we. "Where am I...?" I asked, looking back at her.
She opened the car door and nodded me to get out. I followed her around the corner.
For the answer she chose dramatic voice and waaaay too enthusiastic hand gesture. It was funny cause that was something I would probably do.
She replied: "Avengers Compound."
