•••••••ONE YEAR LATER•••••••••
I wake up to the sound of birds chirping.
A smile forms on my face.
Yes, birds are chirping.
I throw my blanket off of me and look around for Harris, of course he's not here.
After I saw my parents in the compound I grabbed them and ran along with Kane back to the meeting spot. I saw Harris there but he had a absent look in his face. He told me he killed Sourthern. His only brother. He looked good after a couple of days, and claims he recovered fine but I still think he misses his brother. After that we started to renovate the palace. The selected boys wanted to help which made the renovation go by faster. The only room we have left is the women/men's room. That's probably where Harris is now.
My parents still don't want to talk about what happen at the compound, but they said they will tell me soon. They have been in the doctors wing for 6 months and then they spent the rest of the time in there room or the garden. I haven't talked to them about the Selection yet. And Kane is living with us. It was to dangerous for him to go back to the compound, so here he is.
It's awkward.
I had temporarily lived in the palace with 35 boys, and Kane makes me feel awkward.
But everyone seems oblivious to Kane.
So I don't communicate with him.
I get up and open my curtains and step onto my brand new balcony. It over looks the garden which is growing brand new flowers and has brand new stone benches. The garden is lined with brand new trees, too.
You can tell I love all the 'brand newness.'
And soon I will be wearing a brand new ring.
Harris and I have decided to make the engagement official after the renovations.
The warm air and bright sun fills the atmosphere.
Summer.
My favorite season.
I go back into my room and throw on a black maxi skirt and a sky blue flary tang top. I toss on white high heels and pull my hair in to a bun.
As I walk to the bathroom to put on makeup, my stomach growls so loud I am afraid the palace will collapse again. So I ditch my makeup and head down to the dinning room instead. We found the rest of the maids, waiters, and guards in a bomb shelter I never knew we had.
I open the doors and the aroma of sausage makes my knees go weak.
No one else is at the table.
The past year has been like this. We don't all eat at the same time, we just come in the dinning room and eat what ever is on the table. We don't really talk much. 'We' as in, everyone in the place. Everyone is doing their own thing all the time.
I sit down at the head of the table and immediately start loading up my plate.
After about 5 mins of fill my dish I dig in. I grabbed pancakes, sausage, hash browns, oranges, toast, more sausage, waffles, eggs, and oh did I mention sausage.
I scarf down all my pancakes and wash my eggs down with orange juice.
The sound of drills from the women's/men's room vibrate the table slightly.
Suddenly I am no longer hungry. I push my plate in front of me and stand up.
I'm so lonely
I feel so greedy.
I am greedy.
Here I am siting in a dinning room that can fit 150 dinning tables with a table loaded with food and I am whining about how lonely I am.
The only guard in the room is sitting in a chair with his hat over his face .
I think he is... snoring.
I throw my hands in my face.
What is this feeling I am feeling?!
Happiness?
No!
Sadness?
No?!
Loneliness?
I don't know.
The drilling stops and foot steps near the door starts.
I paddle over to the door expecting Harris.
The door swings open and Kane walks in.
Today he is wearing a gray t-shirt and ripped jeans.
His face lights up a little when he sees me and his eyes flash with emotion.
"Hey Syrup." He casually say walking pass me toward the mountain of food.
"Your real right?" I ask following him and sit down back into my seat.
"Well I hope I'm real. Why do you ask? Are you questioning our existence?"
He grabs bacon then settled down in the other head chair.
"I'm only asking because it feels like this castle is filled with ghost." I tell him.
He shovels the bacon.
"I was thinking the same thing."
I take in every detail of him. Finally I am having a conversation with a human
Once he was done eating he stood up and walked toward the door. My heart drops to my stomach
"Where are you going?" I blurt out but immediately regret it.
He just gives me a cute smile.
"See ya later Syrup."
Then he leaves.A/n
