Looking out the stained glass window, you wish you were anywhere else right now. You feel guilty; it's your Mother's wedding day. You should be happy for her, but you're not. You never thought she would remarry, much less, at her age. You didn't think you'd be getting a new big brother at 18, either. He's 25, but he still lives with his dad, your soon to be stepdad. Your mother didn't go into detail, but apparently he had a well paying job, but it turned out the company was a face for drugs. Since he testified, he didn't have to serve any time, but he hasn't been able to find work since. You haven't even met him before now, their relationship was long distance and you were busy graduating and preparing for college. It just so happens Han, your stepfather, has a large house in the suburbs, a half an hour bus ride from your college. You wanted to live in student housing, but you have no excuse to not live at home. You're dreading it, they are newlyweds after all.
"How do I look, honey?" Her words pull you out of your thoughts."
"You look beautiful, Mum." You can't deny that she's glowing.
She smiles in response, then looks at the clock. "It's time!" She sounds so excited, you feel even guiltier for your foul mood. You stare at the floor while you walk behind her to the alter. You're feeling somewhat nervous, you've only met Han a handful of times, and this is the first time seeing Ben. You look up, taking a peek at him standing beside his father. He's much taller than you expected, he's built, he must work out. His suit is tailored perfectly, accentuating his broad shoulders, firm chest, and the rest of his muscular body. It's a pretty basic groomsmen suit, but what it lacks in fancy-ness it makes up for in how fitted it is. Han smiles at your mother, and you fall into place that you were showed at the rehearsal.
It's a small wedding, only close friends and family attending, and just you and Ben as the bridesmaids and groomsmen. You suppose it's because it isn't either of their first weddings, and they are older. You zone out during their vows, finding the tan carpet beneath your feet rather interesting. You don't care to hear how they're going to love and cherish one another for the rest of their life. As bitter as you are, you're still happy for them, just not happy about how drastically your life is going to change. Everyone claps once they kiss, and you're glad it's finally finished.
Then, the reception starts. It's a late wedding, so only drinks and appies are being served. The crowd is older, so you don't fit in at all. Ben is the closest to your age, and you're not interested in speaking to him at all. The last thing you want is a new sibling. Relatives from both sides of your family come by and compliment on how beautiful and kind you are. You pessimistically wonder how they could say you're kind, they don't even know you. You're literally doing the bare minimum here. You showed up, and did your job, and now you want to drink the night away. You order a cocktail, and when your mother sees, she quietly shouts your name, "What do you think you're doing!?"
You roll your eyes, "I'm one year away from the drinking age. Give me a break."
Han places a hand on her thigh, "Let the kid drink, it's a special occasion."
She frowns, but listens to her husband. They end up dancing, and you're left alone sipping on your second, no, third drink of the night. You're definitely feeling the alcohol now. You've been a saint throughout school, paying attention to your studies to get scholarships and good grades. You figured you can let loose in college, when you're an adult and have more freedom. You look to your left to find Ben sitting beside you. His suit jacket is off, and his white sleeves are pulled up to reveal his muscular forearms. His tie is loosened, and shirt unbottomed too. If he wasn't your brother, you'd think he's looks hot in the dim lighting. Now that you stared, the air feels awkward so you speak up.
"Why aren't you drinking?"
He sips his glass of ice water, "I'm taking you home."
You furrow your eyebrows, you weren't informed of this. "Why?" You ask, and realize you sound absolutely dumb.
"You really think they're coming home?" He nods his head to your mother and his father. They're grinding on each other, and it's a sight you wish you could burn from your mind.
You down the rest of your drink. "Can we get outta here now?"
"Sure." He stands up, and you follow him out.
