Chapter 19

I heard the sound of crutches hitting the pavements as I scribbled on my textbook. I didn't need to glance up to see who it was.

"Hi." He sat down beside me, shifting his crutches to his left side.

"Hey." I finished off my homework, and turned to look at Dakota.

He dug into his pocket and retrieved his car keys. "Drive us to the park?"

"Why me?" I asked confused.

He pointed to his injured leg and pouted. I've got to admit, it really worked in normal situations, but today, I just didn't feel like driving.

"You managed to drive us to school today!" I stated incredulously.

"I was being a gentleman."

"Well, I was being a lady, and ladies don't drive to their first date."

"You'll be the first." He smirked.

I packed my bag by stuffing all books and whatsoever into it. It's an untidy habit of mine. I gave Dakota a flat look.

"You're kidding right?" I asked after awhile.

"No, now help me up."

He grabbed his crutches and reached out to me for support. I steadied him, helping to put a crutch on each of his sides.

"A gentleman drives their girlfriend to their first date." I said thoughtfully.

He chuckled. "This is an exception. It's dangerous for me to drive, Anna, you know that."

"Then why do you still drive me to school?"

"Because you are lazy to walk?" He tried.

Aww, shoot. He's got a point there.

I thought of something cheesy to say. "You don't answer a question with a question."

"I'm extraordinary."

"Okay whatever." We reached the parking lot and Dakota threw his keys in my direction. It flew in a perfect arc and I readied myself to catch it.

It came down from its projectile and ended up...

In the mud.

Of course I had missed it; I had horrible hand-eye coordination. Dakota laughed and I scowled.

"Don't make me break your bones." I reached down to pick up the darn keys, cursing.
