*IMPORTANT NOTE AT END*
Chapter 25
I plopped down onto my seat in homeroom, ready to start the day. I was early; so I decided to complete some assignments. At first, I had wanted to sleep, but a certain memory came up fresh in my mind that made me think twice.
I dug out my English essay that was due tomorrow, ducked my head, and was completely absorbed on writing for the next twenty minutes or so, until a hand shot straight into my field of vision.
I looked up, irritated at whoever who broke my train of thought. Instead of seeing Dakota, I saw Adam.
He had a boyish smile on. His hair was disheveled, just the way that I had liked it. Notice the past tense.
He flashed me his award-winning grin. "Hey, Anna."
What was he doing? Doesn't he know that I was supposed to be mad at him? After what he has done?
I was literally at a crossroad. Should I just put everything aside and forgive him? Or should I act as if I have never seen him?
Adam looked like he was expecting an answer, so I just went with the usual wave, without any smiles. I couldn't choose what to do on time.
"I haven't had the chance to talk to you in a while. How have you been doing?"
Inwardly, I cringed at his formality. His voice brought back old memories of those days when I crushed on him. I could feel something stuck in my throat, making speech difficult.
Suddenly, I was as timid as a mouse. I finally brought myself to utter a word though. "Fine."
"You're still with my buddy Dakota, right?"
"Yeah."
"How is your relationship going?"
I peered at him closely. Why was he asking such a question? Hell, since he was 'buddies' with Dakota, why didn't he just ask him instead? I didn't see a point in the conversation - or where it was heading.
I decided to be completely honest with him. "Look, Adam. What do you want? Please make this short and sweet -"
I was cut off when I felt his soft lips on mine. This kiss was different; it felt wrong, yet right at the same time. His lips morphed onto mine. At that moment, my eyes shot open and looked around to see that nobody was paying attention. Thank heavens.
I tried to push Adam away, but it felt like I was trying to lift a boulder. I silently cursed myself for not exercising, or else I might have a slight chance to escape from Adam.
I decided to work on his face then. I slapped his cheek, which did the trick. He broke the kiss and slumped on his chair, a stupid smile plastered on his face.
My face grew hot in anger and embarrassment. "Adam! What the hell?"
He leaned back and put his hands behind his head, a lazy smirk plastered in his handsome face. "I like you, Anna."
I was literally taken aback. This guy, whom I had had a crush on for so long, ditched my date with him for another girl and acted all cozy with her, was now confessing to me. I closed my eyes and sighed.
"Sorry Adam -"
"You like me too last time right?"
"Yeah, that was a long time ago -"
"Let it come back! Like me again!"
I stared at him in disbelief, not knowing where this was going. "Adam, I have a boyfriend. You have a girlfriend. I'm not going to cheat, and so are you."
"I don't have a girlfriend." He muttered.
"What about Naya?" I asked, very confused.
Adam hesitated for a while, then said. "We broke up."
I honestly didn't know how to respond to that. If I was angry, it might insult him. But if I was sorry, he might continue to get me to like him.
I settled for keeping quiet. I just looked at him intently, waiting for him to speak up again. When he didn't, an awkward silence swallowed us.
"Oh," I managed to get out.
He glanced up at me. "I'm sorry, Anna."
"For what?"
"For loving you."
********
A grinning Dakota met me at my locker. I was still stunned by what Adam has just told me. I hastily fumbled with my locker combination, getting denied access three times. It clicked on the fourth try and I yanked the door open. I shelved my books according to their subjects clumsily.
Dakota looked at me, amused. "You're unusually clumsy today, huh?"
I nodded. In my head was an ongoing battle if I should tell Dakota what Adam did to me. Or told me. Or both.
To tell the truth, the 'don't tell Dakota' side was winning.
I slammed my locker shut as Dakota passed me his car keys.
"To the hospital we go!" He fist pumped the air. He was so desperate to get his cast removed, that he had been chatting none stop about this day.
I laughed the first hearty laugh of the day. If you have not guessed, Adam kinda ruined my mood for the whole school day.
I did the usual ritual of helping Dakota into the car for the last time. I fumbled at the key ignition for a while, and finally... Dropped the keys.
"Shit." I cursed. Bending down, I felt around for the cool, hard metal. I actually found it, and shoved it into the ignition quickly.
Before I shifted gears, I realized that Dakota was studying me with curiosity in his eyes.
"What?" I asked as I glanced across him to see for the rear view mirror. I pulled out of the parking lot and out of the school.
"You're unusually clumsy today, Anna," he stated.
"Uh-huh. I mean, nope. I'm not. Anyway do we take Laneway Exit or Princeton Road?" I tried to change the subject instead. Of course I knew which way to take... Duh.
"Laneway." He shifted in his seat. "Is there something you would like to tell me?"
"No."
"There is."
I ignored him and drove in silence. After what seems like eternity of awkwardness, I reached out to turn on the radio. Titanium by David Guetta was playing. I cranked the volume up louder, until I could feel the bass vibrating on my chair.
To my dismay, Dakota turned the knob, turning down the music. I started sweating. I couldn't lie; I was terrible at that.
"Something is definitely up."
I decided not to answer him. Instead, I sang along with the music. Or should I say, croaked.
"I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose. Fire away -"
"Anna! You should work on your singing skills," he suggested. He raised his eyebrows at me as I stole a glance at him.
I didn't feel at all insulted by his comment. "You know what? I can't wait for your cast to be removed. You're a horrible passenger to drive around."
"Thank you." He winked at me.
"It was meant to be sarcastic!"
"I took that as a compliment."
I groaned.
Fifteen minutes of silence passed, then Dakota broke the silence. "I wonder what's with Adam... He has been acting weird all day."
My body stiffened at his comment. "R-really?"
"Yeah. I saw him with Naya. They were in the park having lunch instead of the cafeteria. He looked depressed."
"Oh."
Things were rushing through my head. So Adam and Naya were still together?
"Yeah," Dakota answered. I had not even realized I had said that out loud.
Why did Adam lie to me? What was he getting at? My fingers clenched around the steering wheel so hard that my knuckled were turning white.
I didn't understand? Was he pretending to be in love with me? Why? Why now?
"Anna!"
Dakota's shout of alarm broke me out of my reverie. My vision focused on the big red lorry approaching my car. The lorry was growing closer and closer to me by milliseconds. It was then that I realized I had been steeping on the accelerator. A check on my dashboard showed me that I have been speeding at 140 miles/second.
I shifted my foot and stomped on the brake pedal, while I swerved to the right, earning both a horn from the red lorry and a near miss. My heart thumped in my chest as my face grew hot in panic. I stopped at the side of the road to catch my breath from the near-death encounter I just had.
I slumped on the steering wheel, feeling sick. Dakota's blue eyes met mine in shock. "Anna..."
Tears started pouring down my face. "I'm sorry." I whispered.
His blue eyes softened. He reached out over his seat and enveloped me in a hug. "It was just an accident. It's okay Anna. We're still alive."
I nodded, still shaken. I pulled away from him and started driving again. We were just a mile away from the hospital.
As I drove, a plan started to form in my head.
I parked the car in a vacant lot and pulled the key out of its ignition.
I looked at Dakota straight in the eyes, my watery green ones meeting his sea blue ones.
"I have something to tell you."
