Chapter 44

Anna's POV

"Hey sweetheart, how's school?" Mom called as I entered the kitchen.

I plopped down on one of the chairs at the counter and picked up a pack of chips. "Normal."

Mom turned around to study my face. "You don't look normal, dear. Anyway, don't eat those, it's for your dad. I've picked these out for you."

She tossed another packet at me. "100% diet chips" is written in big, fat red lettering. I raised my eyebrows and tore open the bag. The chips weren't half as bad as I thought it would be.

I picked up my bag, with my packet of chips in my hand, and trotted up the stairs to my room. I threw my bag on the floor and dived straight for my bed. As I lay there, Ed's words replayed in my mind.

I seriously wondered what he meant. As far as I knew, Dakota didn't hang out with Ed or Stan at all. So how would they know about Dakota's personality.

Maybe Ed is gay? I chuckled at that thought. That'll be... Interesting.

I put my hand in my bag of chips, and tried to find another piece to shove in my mouth. My search came out futile and that's when I realised that I had finished the whole packet of chips. It's not my fault that I eat when I'm stressed.

I decided to take a shower. After that, I blow-dried my wet locks and started work on my assignments. I was so engrossed in my work that mom had to come into my room to call me for dinner.

Dinner wasn't really a silent affair, as mom was trying to promote her new Shepard's pie recipe. I really liked it, and before thinking, I took a second portion.

After dinner, I retreated back into my room. That was when I noticed that my tracker wasn't working well. It kept flashing random numbers on the screen.

I was in the middle of unscrewing the back cover when there was a knock at my door. I found that quite odd as nobody ever disturbs me at this time. Mom would be in the kitchen, dad would be watching the next soccer match, Amber would be in her room talking to the millionth boy that she knows.

To my utter surprise, the door pried open to reveal a curious-looking Amber. She poked her head in and scanned my room.

I smirked. "May I help you, Amber?"

Her eyes snapped up to look at mine. "Oh hey. I was wondering if I could talk to you for a second."

"Sure, take a seat." I patted the spot right beside me. "Be careful not to sit on these screws. I hate this tracker. I hate diabetes."

She sat next to me and looked down at her hands, not saying anything.

"Hey, if you came here to talk, you really should talk. Don't mind me fixing this piece of crap; I'm all ears." I informed her, still fiddling with my broken equipment.

"Well..." She started. "Anna, is there anything wrong that you'd like to share with me?"

I gave her a quizzical look. "I just told you this morning, didn't I?"

"About Dakota? Oh, not really. It's just that I saw you going to the rooftop again."

She was talking about 'Anna's Haven' on the school rooftop.

"What about it?" I asked.

"You didn't go there for quite some time already." She stated.

I sighed. "What's your point, Amber?"

"If you have any problems, you can talk to me about it, okay? Don't forget that you have a sister."

I smiled at her words. "Well, that's very kind of you."

Amber rolled her grey eyes and blew a strand of brown hair out of her face. "Of course I am."

"It's just been tough these days, Amber. What with diabetes and Dakota." I let out my breath. "I just don't know what to do."

"You'll be fine." She patted my back. "Hey, fairytales always have happy endings! It'll come soon."

"Yeah, what if life isn't a fairytale? If everyone has a happy ending to look forward to, why is there unhappiness?"

"Look at it this way. When you are in the process of getting to the end, you have to survive hardships right? That's what makes the end worthwhile."

I stared at Amber, unable to believe that she had turned into one of the Wise Men. I gave her an approving look. "Where did you get this preaching business, Einstein?"

She shrugged. "I was born with this natural talent. Besides, I was just trying to help."

I pulled her into a tight hug. "I love you, Amber."

"The feeling's mutual," she muttered into my shoulder.

"I gotta get back to my room, I've got work to do." She pulled away and got up.

I got up too and walked her to the door. "The endings will be worthwhile," I said with a wink.

"Yup, I really want to get a good overall grade this year, you know? Impress mom and dad..."

"Continue at this rate and I'm sure you will succeed."

"Are you saying that just 'cos you are my sister and that's your main job?"

I acted mortified. "What? No!"

Amber smiled, revealing her row of perfect teeth. "Yeah, yeah. Goodnight then."

"Nights."

I shut the door and grinned to myself. I really love it when Amber made sense.

The endings would be all worthwhile.

Part of me missed Dakota. However, there was a little -negligible, but present- part of me that chose to believe that our relationship is over. It was done. Nada. Our hardships have built a wall around each of us.

I hoped that Dakota and I could start over again, learning to love again and make things right from the start.

As I stood in my room, I pictured myself standing in my dilemma. A huge mess. I decided to sort them out slowly, beginning from the start. By fixing my tracker.

I prodded at the system for a while, until it made a 'beep' sound. I stared at the machine in shock. I actually fixed it! The screen flashed to life, reflecting what I had for dinner. I chuckled, proud at myself for being such a tech-pro. Well, not really. I was lucky this time around.

I pieced the device back together and stared at it in satisfaction. That was when my phone rang, jolting me out of my daydream.

My eyebrows knitted together as I saw the caller ID. Why would he call?

I picked the call up, still confused. "Hello?"

"Anna, I need your help, and quick!"

My eyes widened and I pinched myself to check if I was dreaming. Apparently I wasn't. I put the phone back to my ear again, only to hear his calls for help.

"Adam?"
