Chapter 24

Dakota laced his fingers to mine and opened the door or his bedroom and stuck his head out for a moment.

"Yes, I'm home mom. Give me a second," he yelled.

He popped his head back into the room and sighed. "Alright. My mom can be a little crazy sometimes. I'm just warning you, okay? If all else turns bad, just run home."

I laughed at his joke. How bad can his mom be, I thought.

I nodded anyway, and he led me out of the room, down the stairs.

There was a blond sitting on the couch in the lounge, reading a magazine. She must be Mrs Evans.

She must have heard Dakota and I, because she turned around. At first, astonishment registered on her face, followed by a softer look.

"And who is this, Dakota?" She asked.

I blushed and smiled, ready to introduce myself, but Dakota beat me to it.

"She's Anna, mom. Remember her? You were good friends with her mom and I went to the same kindergarten as Anna."

"Anna?" She swept her eyes from my head to my toes, giving me a once over. "Anna Summers?"

"Yeah, that's me, Mrs Evans." I answered sheepishly, feeling my cheeks and ears burning. I silently thanked God for the dim lighting in the room.

"She's my girlfriend, mom."

My face felt like it had been stuck into a campfire. I was probably sweating already, even my palms were getting clammy.

Mrs Evans raised her eyebrows. "Is that really?"

I smiled sheepishly and shrugged. "Yes, Mrs Evans."

"Just call me Christine, please." She grinned and showed her two perfect rows of teeth. She then turned to Dakota, who was inspecting his nails. "Dakota, I distinctively remember when you were in kindergarten, every single day you would tattle about Anna to me."

Dakota blushed. "M-mom..."

Oh, this was good. I wonder what he had tattled about me in the past. I crossed my arms over my chest and shot Dakota a devious look.

I turned on my heel to face Christine, who was clearing up her magazines on the desk. "What would he tattle about, Christine?"

Dakota face palmed himself. He was so gonna get it tomorrow.

Christine's smile stretched wider across her perfect face. "Let's start at the beginning over dinner, shall we?"

Suddenly, I panicked. I must have sent the Evans' a worried expression as both of them asked me simultaneously, "What's wrong?"

"I don't want to burden you, Christine. I was just about to leave."

"Don't!" She yelled. I jumped in shock, speechless.

Her calm expression returned. "I'm sorry about that. It's just that Georgia called me an hour ago to tell me that she isn't coming back for dinner. However, I've already ordered Chinese, and if you don't eat, the food will go to waste. Don't be shy about it, Anna. We are almost family."

She gave me a warm hug before walking to the kitchen. Her last words sounded creepy instead of welcoming to me. I shuddered.

Dakota shoved his hands into his pockets. "So."

"So?"

"You wanna watch some TV while waiting for the food? By the way, you're okay with Chinese food right?"
