Conny

Later that night

I tuned out Conny's goodbye speech until I heard Don sobbing.

"Conny..." He said between sniffles.  I looked at him with pity.

Staring at him crying, and looking back at Conny, I realized that the ones that would be hurt the most by Conny wasn't Conny herself, but the people who loved her.

She doesn't realize it, but by leaving she's hurting everyone who cares about her.  How selfish.

Mama and Conny left, and everyone dispersed from the front door to start their evening routines.  I was sweeping the dining room with Emma when...

"CONNY?!  You're kidding me!" Emma yelled, looking at the table where Little Bunny was sitting,

"What's the matter, Emma?" I asked, knowing full well what was going on. "Look," she said, pointing to Little Bunny.  I gasped.

"She already left though didn't she?" I asked.  I wanted to encourage her, but it would be out of character for me to do that and someone might notice.  Gilda and Norman walked in together, talking about chores when they saw Emma running to get Little Bunny.

"Conny's already gone!" Gilda told her.

"What do we do?" Emma asked.

"There's still time," Ray said as he entered the room.  "From the window, I saw the lights at the gate were still on.  Mama isn't back either, so I don't think Conny left yet."

"Let's hurry, Emma, Sparrow." Norman encouraged.  I sighed.

"Fine, but this better be quick," I said, faking annoyance.

"Okay!" Emma said.  The three of us left through the back door after Norman picked the lock and ran to the gate.

Norman really is slow. I thought on the way, keeping pace with Emma.  They're both slow. They were both panting by the time we reached the gate.

"'Never go there, no matter what'" Emma quoted.

"We'll get in trouble together." Norman encouraged.

I merely gave her a small smile.

We walked inside.  The air was moist and it stunk.  You could hear the dripping of leaky pipes from the walls.  There was a big silver truck to the right of the brick tunnel, and a single door to the left, where Norman would meet Peter Ratri.  I felt like throwing up just thinking about him.

"Is this the truck that will take Conny?" Emma wondered aloud. "Actually, I've never seen a vehicle before.

Norman went around the truck to the front while Emma stayed where she was.  I followed Norman and looked at the vehicle.  It had been a while since I had seen one, even if it was an outdated truck.

"No one's here," Norman commented after inspecting the front of the truck.

"Maybe she'll find it if we leave it in the back," Emma suggested.

"You're right," he responded, still intrigued by the tunnel.

Suddenly, Emma gasped and dropped Little bunny.

"No- Norman.  Sparrow." Her voice cracked on my name.  I looked at her and her eyes were wide like she'd seen a corpse or something.

Oh, wait.  She did.

I followed Norman to look in the back of the truck, and sure enough, there was Conny's body, drained of all blood and life, with a Vida sticking out of her chest.  Her hair was soaked in some foreign liquid and her eyes were wide with fear.  I gasped with Norman after pushing down bile.
