"You," a man said, a spear in hand. Clearly, the man who had attacked Ruby had seen me enter the apartment.

I covered my face with both hands, slowly backing away.

The man grabbed my throat and slammed me against the nearest wall. "Where is she?"

My breaths come out in short gasps. "Who-" I cried out when he slammed me against the wall. A headache quickly formed. I tried to pry his fingers off.

"You know who! The child that you stole from me-"

"She left. She only stayed long enough for her to feel better. Sh-she went home-"

"Liar! She's inside, isn't she?!" he snapped.

Cries escape my throat as his grip tightens around my neck.

He placed the point of the spear against my throat. "Tell me, where, or else."

"He-help! Someone, please!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. I cried out when he swiped his spear across my cheek. I fumbled around for my phone.

He glanced at those watching before shifting his hand from my throat to my hair.

I dropped a little, gasping for air. When I looked up, the spear was gone.

He ripped the phone from my hand and smashed it against the ground.

"NO!!"

"You should be more concerned about your own well-being than your phone," he snapped before pulling me away from the building.

I trembled and looked at those watching in horror. Tears ran down my cheeks.

Just then, sirens met my ears quickly, followed by car doors closing. "Freeze! Let the woman go and put your hands in the air!"

The man snorted before holding me against his chest, his arm firmly around my neck. "Go ahead if you dare to risk the little girl."

"We're warning you," the policeman said.

He laughed. "You won't go through with it."

I tried to heel his shin, but it was solid. I flinched when he tightened his arm.

"What do you think you're trying to do? You'll have to do better than that," he muttered.

I used both hands to fight his arm but to no avail. I took a deep breath before leaning over and biting his arm as hard as I could. Hurl inched up my throat when I ended up drawing a little blood.

The man cried out, yanking his arm away.

I lurched forward toward the police officers hoping to find safety.

"Where do you think you're going?!" the man yelled, reaching out to snag my arm.

Just as his hand encircled my wrist, a gun shut sounded, and the man collapsed, taking me to the ground with him.

I remained on my hands and knees, shaking, unwilling to look up for fear of what might be there.

"Ma'am, are you all right?" a policeman asked, rushing over. He gently took my arm, leading me away from my attacker.

I couldn't say anything, just shook uncontrollably.

He sat me down where the man wasn't in sight before calling a paramedic over.

The paramedic sat with me and helped me calm down enough to explain what happened. "You don't look too badly hurt, so that's the good news," she whispered as she finished cleaning up the cut on my cheek.
