Chapter 5
“How do you even open this?” Megan said to herself as she tried opening the lock on the front door of her uncle’s townhouse. People walking by or biking around were giving her weird looks as she struggled to open the lock. After several minutes trying to open the door she finally gave it one big push and she was in the comforting home. The place was much messier now though she had left early in the morning. It was probably Oliver, her uncle scrambling to find his car keys again. The couch seemed more comfortable than her bed so she decided to rest and watch a Doctor Who marathon to pass the time by until her uncle would get home. Before she could have any second thoughts she decided to roll over and search around for her laptop in the dark. The laptop's bright screen blinded her for a second. She blinked rapidly until she could see clearly again. The green button flashed into the corner of the laptop screen indicating that Trevor was online. It didn't surprise her at all.
When and where? Megan typed quickly on her keyboard.
Manchester station at 7am sharp on the Tuesday. I have the tickets already prepared, just show up.
Megan replied with a "see you then" and then closed her laptop before she could see Trevor’s answer back. All she wanted to do was get this trip over with. Suddenly the door flew open and she could feel the warm summer air brush against her skin. The air condition was up to the coldest temperature and she felt like cuddling up with a blanket was the best idea.
“How’s it going Megan?” her Uncle Oliver had asked her as he set his bags down near the big yellow couch where she was sprawled on.
“Um I’m pretty good. Just a little tired though,” Megan responded taking a sip from her tea that she had helped herself to make earlier.
“I see you’re very comfortable,” Oliver replied with a small chuckle as he looked at her position on the couch.
“Actually, I need to talk to you about something very important. I’m kind of asking for your advice about a situation.” Megan said as she sat up on the couch.
“Well go on ahead. I’ll just be making some tea in the kitchen,” Oliver answered back as he made his way.
“So, I know you’re probably wondering why I came back here in the first place. Well someone from London found my letters and my backpack. They had found my contact information and spoke to me through email. He convinced me to go back here and retrieve it but it was far less easy than I thought it would be. Now I have to go on a scavenger hunt as you may call it, to say the least and find the last pieces of art that Aunt Abby had left all around the country before she died. He told that the last letter would handle all of this and it gave all the information on where to go but I don’t know if I am so sure about this whole idea after contemplating on it. It sounds too risky to be honest,” Megan finished off with a big sigh.
“Wow that was a lot to take in,” Oliver finally said back after he sat there staring at his tea while thinking of a response.
“The last thing your aunt would have wanted was for you to get hurt or harmed in any way through her adventures she had given you. I can’t really stop you from doing what you want because you are 18 but it seems like you’re asking for my approval so I think we can make a few alterations to this plan of yours,” Oliver said back to Megan.
“Yes of course. Well to begin with I’m going to have to take a train to Cannes, France and find the artwork.--” Megan was in the middle of speaking when Oliver interrupted.
“Wait, wait you haven’t even told me the lad’s name yet or his age or where he’s from. You know the basics. Do tell.” Oliver said in probably the British accent she had heard him use.
“Sorry I forgot. Um his name is Trevor Douglas. He is roughly around 18, and he’s from Sussex County in England. He also told me in the email that he is going to University of Cambridge though it was kind of far away. He found my bag and letters containing it when he went on a school trip there last summer. So far, that’s all I know.” Megan answered.
“Okay here’s my offer. I know you’ve traveled before without me or any other adults so I generally trust you. You are my niece of course but you’re also Abby’s niece which gets me a little worried for you Meg. All i ask from you is to check up on me by calling me at least every day just so I know you’re okay,” Oliver said as he picked up something from one of his bags he had carried over. “This is your new London phone. Now, I don’t want you to worry about a thing. If you any problems at all just give me a ring and I’ll pick up aHi s soon as I can. Don’t be hesitant. We’re family,” Oliver finished his statement.
Megan gasped as she took the new phone that her uncle had given her. Last time she came to London she practically relied on pay phones and telephone boxes to contact anybody so this was a good change.
“Thank you so much!” Megan exclaimed as she gave Oliver a hug and tucked the phone in her bag.
It was done now. She had made her final decision. Her uncle had just given her advice. If anything had gotten wrong in her plans she could just call Oliver and this would all be over. She would never have to go to London again, as of right now though she was going to Paris with determination in her eyes.
