THE BONFIRE

LYN'S BONFIRE didn't disappoint. she sat with newt as twilight faded, and he began to teach her the basics of the glade after the celebrations of her remembering her name had concluded.
"rule one: never leave these four walls. unless you're a runner, of course, but..." he glanced over anxiously at the keeper of the runners, who was leaning against a tree with a few other boys, his arms crossed and brows furrowed. "i don't think minho's keen on that idea."
lyn rolled her eyes as newt continued, "rule two: never hurt another glader. it's the only way we can keep peace and harmony here. we need trust, you understand?"
"yeah."
"and rule three: every glader does their part. no slacking, alright? every job is important."
"mhm. got it."
"good that. now, try some of this if you want." he handed her a drink, and she took it.
"what is it?" she asked, though the answer obviously wasn't important to her since she took a huge gulp before newt even had the chance to open his mouth. the burning sensation in her throat as she swallowed hit her like a train, and newt sat and giggled as she struggled to keep it down for a second, before telling her, "gally's recipe. refuses to share it with anyone. odd one, gally is, but he cares about the gladers — i think."
the pair glanced behind the log they were perched on at gally, who was thrashing a medium-sized boy around on the floor.
"yeah, i can tell." she joked.
"minho's got some competition," newt chuckled. "you're nearly as sarcastic as him."
gally caught the girl looking over at him despite her efforts to be subtle. he wiped a bead of sweat off his forehead before walking over confidently to her and newt.
"what d'ya say, greenie? i'll go easy on ya, don't worry." he didn't seem too aggressive,
so the girl decided she'd give it a try."my name's lyn. and why not?" newt looked over at her, jaw open, surprised at her answer. soon after, every glader had their eyes fixed on the new arrival as she took her place opposite gally on the sand pit.
"are you sure about this?" a boy with brown hair asked her hesitantly. she recognised him as the boy earlier, and the one chuck told her had become a runner a month prior. thomas.
she nodded at him, not completely sure where her sudden surge of confidence had come from. and then she caught minho glaring at her, shaking his head ever so slightly as if to say: "don't". but she ignored him completely, and ran towards gally without warning.
he caught her in his strong arms, and then performed a similar manoeuvre to the one chuck pulled earlier on, though noticeably more polished. lyn fell on the floor, again with no grace in the landing whatsoever.
she made out a few shouts from around her, but her adrenaline seemed to kick in and the noises formed into muffled hums. and then she felt rage building up inside her, at the people who put her there, at the world, at gally (though not nearly as much as the former points, despite the fact he was who she was taking it all out on) and she stood up.
gally had his back to her as he was addressing a few of the other gladers, so she seized the opportunity and used it to her advantage.
she lunged towards him throwing every bit of her weight onto his back and nearly toppling over herself in the process.
