A STAMPEDE OF GLADERS hurtled towards the box at once. lyn didn't know much about the workings of the glade, but she'd been there long enough to know that this wasn't normal. the alarm that gave warning of a new arrival at the same time every month was not meant to ring on an unscheduled, regular day, especially after they'd already been told that their time of taking in greenies was over. and, judging by the reactions from the boys now surrounding her, it hadn't ever done anything like this before.

on the way out of the meeting, which had met an abrupt end, lyn almost got trampled trying to squeeze through the door. minho had grabbed her hand from behind once he saw her struggling and acted as a sort of shield from the rest of the obstreperous teen boys, a favour lyn thanked him for by gently squeezing his fingers and looking back at him lovingly.

now standing on top of the box, the girl was watching in fascination as gally and newt pulled the trapdoor-like covering open — it was the first arrival she'd witnessed after all, and under the unconventional circumstances, her intrigue was enough to fuel a rocket.

being at the front of the crowd, lyn was able to see part of what looked like a body laying unmoving on the floor. and it was a girl.

she supposed she should've felt some kind of relief or reassurance that she'd finally have another person to speak to and share her problems with, all the things that boys wouldn't understand. and she supposed she did a little bit.

except, most of whatever lyn was feeling was bitterness and resentment for the girl who had arrived and was now trying (and succeeding) to take the attention away from her. she was being selfish, she knew it, but she didn't much care.

regardless of her split views, she knew she was going to befriend this completely unexpected arrival.

i'll at least try not to be hostile, unless she comes within a three metre radius of minho and/or speaks to him. half-joking, she put her thoughts to rest.

she could only hope minho didn't hear, since, despite her somewhat getting used to knowing the difference between keeping her thoughts inside her own head and sharing them with the boy her mind was linked to, she was still finding her feet in controlling it.

the new girl looked pale. her dark, luscious brown hair fell over her ghostly face. she was breathing steadily.

it was silent. until suddenly she jolted awake, breathing rapidly, and sat upright.

"thomas," she just about managed to cry out, before she collapsed back down into her slumber.

and, of course, everyone turned to look at thomas.

"i thought lyn's note said she was the last one ever? then why's this one here?" gally asked, baffled like everyone else.

if she thought the boys' expressions when she, the first girl, arrived were funny, these were comedy gold. even lyn's eyebrows furrowed slightly and her mouth curled downwards. it was true — the slip of paper she'd brought up with her specifically stated that she'd be the last one. she didn't know at the time the significance or weight of the five words on the parchment, but standing by the box, surrounded by all of the completely lost boys, she realised just how vital it was to find an answer.
