ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES

THE REST OF THE DAY was a blur.
she went to visit newt just before lunch, and as soon as he saw her he rushed over and embraced her for a minute or so.
"i'm sorry i didn't go straight to you earlier," his voice spoke behind her neck, "it's just i was worried about tommy. he's a mad one."
lyn smiled at him. "it's fine. you know, you should tell him how you feel."
at that he suddenly pulled away, his face as bright red as the tomatoes they grew in the gardens.
the girl giggled at him as they trekked over to frypan's kitchen together. she'd decided that there was no use feeling remorseful or upset about the near-death experience she'd had hours earlier, since no one had died and minho's reassurance about how he'd stick up for her had made her feel a million times better. the plan she'd formed was to try and forget about it as much as possible until her trial.
"nice to see you back, greenie. we missed you at breakfast," frypan greeted her warmly as she approached. he made sure to give her extra tomato soup and had replaced the stale biscuits with little chunks of bread — the tasty sort with a crunchy outside and soft inside. a 'baguette' was what frypan had called it. the name was too fancy for her, but the dough was delicious and she'd already devoured half before she even took her seat.
there were a few minutes of awkward silence shared by the group when they were all sat eating. chuck tried to ask her about the night before but as soon as he'd as much as opened his mouth, he whimpered in pain due to newt's boot crashing against his shin. the attention, though not something new to her, was overwhelming as ever. she didn't mind the questions in all honesty, seeing as she knew she couldn't change the past and there was no point in self-pity, but she hated the fact everyone was judging her and forming their own mangled, most likely incorrect opinions of her. the whole of lunch she was biting away at the inside of her lip, a habit she had picked up and couldn't seem to shake since she'd arrived in the glade. it was sore.
the whole atmosphere was off. with alby taken sick and banished to his bed for the foreseeable future, order was once again lost. and besides, alby meant a lot to the boys and they were worried about him, regardless of his leadership. they were each other's only family after all. this caused sadness to spread across the tables like disease.
lyn met up with gally after lunch and he pulled her close as they walked over to the deadheads for a stroll. "you've been through so much since you've been here, lyn. i don't even know if i'd be able to handle it, and i'm really proud of you for that. someone in the glade — someone you're close with — they tried to... jump. it was a good few years ago now, but i really just want you to know that i'm here for you, minho's here for you, newt's here for you. we all are. and i still mean what i said the other day: anyone gives you any trouble, you come straight to one of us. we'll sort the shank right out."
reassurance. that was one thing she learnt she'd need in the glade. confidence was another, but really it went hand in hand with the former point. either way, gally's words always comforted her; knowing she had arguably the most feared glader on her side protecting her made her feel more safe than she could thank him for.
newt appeared seemingly out of nowhere and called out to the pair: "meeting's now, so hurry up before i drag the both of you myself!"

newt cleared his throat and stepped up to face the dozen gladers sat before him. "i think we all know why we're here. and if you don't, minho is going to explain the events of last night in as much detail as his excessively dumb brain can handle."
