Santa Monica, California
I was driving way over the speed limit but I had no choice, I was already fifty minutes behind schedule and I did not want to be left behind. Stark Industries were doing a demonstration for a new weapon in Afghanistan and as part of Rhodey's branch on the U.S. Air Force, I had to be there.
I was determined to get there as quickly as possible. To increase my speed I kept one hand on the steering wheel as I used the other to bend over and slip the heels off my feet. Having them on the accelerator while trying to push down as hard as I can was making my feet cramp up badly.
As I struggled to get the last stiletto off, my phone began vibrating in the passenger seat beside me.
"Shit!" I panicked, it was probably Tony calling to reprimand me for being late. This was a big deal for him, another opportunity for him to excel.
Keeping my eyes on the road I reached over with my right hand tapping around the passenger seat until I could feel the vibration on my cellphone beneath my palm. I grabbed it and answered it scared about the scolding I was about to receive.
"Tony, I'm so sorry. You know I got home late last night and- "
"Y/N?" the voice from the other side of the phone said. That voice was not Tony Stark and I knew immediately who it was instead.
"Lewis?!" I exclaimed. My shoulders relaxed a little bit knowing that Tony wasn't mad at me but I wasn't expecting a call from Lewis of all people. "Hey, why are you calling?"
"No 'How are you doing?'" he joked. It was kind of rude of me to react the way I did but, again, I wasn't expecting to hear from him.
"I'm sorry, it's just I'm kind of late for a flight. Do you mind if I call you when I land?"
"Yeah...but I...yeah, sure..." his voice had gone quiet like he was hurt that I didn't make any time for him but what choice did I have?
"Thanks, bye."
After about another 9 minutes I had made it to the airport, but this didn't stop me from speeding into the car park. Instead of slowing down first, I skidded beside the jet coming to a harsh stop that sent my body flying sideways and almost into the window of the passenger's seat.
In a matter of seconds, I swiftly removed my seatbelt and flung the car door open. I had my heels in one hand as I rushed to the trunk while slipping them on at the same time tripping over my own feet with every step. I watched the trunk open as Rhodey came up beside taking my suitcase before I could reach for it.
"You're late." He claimed, sternness in his voice.
I gulped, "I'm sorry. I don't know I think I slept through my alarm or something--"
"Tony's late also. You're lucky," Rhodes stated, carrying the bags up the stairs to the jet. I breathed a sigh of relief and followed him to the entrance of the jet.
I watched him as he handed my bag to another flight attendant who escorted it towards the back of the jet. In the distance, a loud engine and a long screech noise filled the area, and I quickly figured out who it was. I turned to face the white Audi with the reg plate that read: Stark 4.
I quickly straightened out my uniform. I was wearing a navy blue blazer accessorized with all the badges and medals I had received from serving in the Air Force. This was accompanied by a knee-length pencil skirt and black heels. I whipped a pair of sunglasses on too as the sun was directly within my eye-line as I stood at the top of the stairs next to Rhodey.
A black car pulled up next to Tony's a couple of seconds later as Tony stepped out from the Audi. The black car's door flew open revealing Happy as the driver.
