"Are you sure this looks nice?" I asked while applying another layer of mascara onto my false lashes. I decided I was going all out and so did Natasha.
Since we began taking this Avengers thing more seriously, I haven't been able to mess around the way I used to. It was bittersweet, but with this team, I was finally maturing and realizing that there's so much more to life than just partying.
"Y/N. You look hot! Although you could add a little something..." She complimented, looking down at my silk off the shoulder dress and gold strapped heels. Curls fell just below my shoulders as Natasha swiveled my body to face hers.
She twisted a tube of red lipstick and began applying it to my lips. "And....there you go."
I turned back to face the mirror and smiled. The red actually complimented my complexion very well. Not to mention it made my teeth look extra pearly. I couldn't help but admire Natasha's look too. The woman was sexy.
Romanoff caught my eye in the reflection of the mirror. She wore a big smile on her face before it fell into a subtle frown.
"I've never really ever experienced this before," she said.
"What? Parties?" I asked before she shook her head.
"No this. I never had the 'let's ready at your girlfriend's house' kinda thing as a teenager. It was just training and ballet and shooting." She stated softly.
"Neither did I," I claimed. "And I'm glad I didn't."
"You don't feel like you missed out on anything?" She asked, tone heightening as if she was surprised by my answer."
I thought about it deeply.
"The place I was at in my life as a teenager was a dark one. Living under my parents' roof. It was abuse and psychological trauma. Running away and training to be a soldier with Rhodey was my way of displacing that anger. It was my coping mechanism. I think if I had stayed and discovered the party scene with drugs and alcohol back when I was 14 years old and used that to cope with my unhappiness instead I would not be in a good place. I might even be dead."
"That is very fair. It might even be true for me." Natasha agreed, "The sad part is the abuse should've never been a part of the story. We should've been allowed to be little girls. We should've been allowed to wear makeup, squeal and talk about boys, and drink so much that one of us has to hold the one's hair back while they're puking in the ladies' room."
We should've been allowed to be little girls.
"We really should've..." I sighed.
"But while we might have been robbed of that, we're able to be women. We are women. We have each other, we have this family. And I have you," she finalized, brightening our fairly dark conversation.
"Aw, I love you," I said pulling her in for a side hug.
"Bruce is gonna die when he sees you in that outfit," I laughed and she giggled as we left her room and headed down for the party.
The two of us strutted down the stairs and parted ways once we'd reached the lounge. The whole floor was crowded, with people drinking, dancing, and mingling everywhere. I loved the atmosphere as for once I felt happy and safe, having a good time with all my co-workers who I could now confidently refer to as my friends.
In the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of Tony and felt it was best to talk to him. The last time we were at a party together it didn't go as planned, and essentially ruined our entire relationship as friends. I hoped that this party could compensate for the last one.
"Hey Mr. Stark," I smiled as I greeted him.
"Y/N. You look great," he complimented. I grinned as he added, "Have you gotten a drink yet?"
