"How was the date?"
Ramona was so close to the edge of her bed Jane worried she would fall. She hadn't even had the chance to close the door of her dormitory before she fired the question at her, using the advantage of an empty dormitory to the best of her abilities. Ramona watched with wide eyes and a grin as Jane got inside and moved over to her bed to sit down, Cleopatra moving over to sit by her lap the moment she was still.
"It was nice."
Ramona wasn't taking that for an answer.
"What happened?" she chirped, if possible, her eyes widening even more in an attempt to make her talk. "Was he sweet? Did he compliment you? Did you talk about your feelings? Did you kiss? Did you ask each other to be together officially? Did you-"
"Slow down," Jane cut her off, alarm evident in her expression at her best friend's unexpected—to her, to anyone else it was obvious Ramona would burst if she didn't speak—rant. "He said I looked beautiful-"
"That's so cute!"
"And he was sweet-"
"I'm so happy I'm going to squeal!"
"And we had fun," Jane sent her a look. Ramona was practically vibrating from excitement. Across from her, Jane was her complete opposite, composed and cool. Seeing them that way, one could question how they managed to become best friends in the first place.
"What did you talk about?"
"About my family, a bit about his family, the expectations we have set on ourselves, things that worry us."
Ramona was slightly confused at their topic but she didn't let it get to her as she nodded. "What else?"
Jane sent her a dubious look, "What else?"
"Did you talk about your feelings?"
"We said we like each other. That's a given, though, I think. He knew it too."
"That's good, though, you both know that now so you can move on from here," she nodded, sent her an encouraging smile. "What happened then?"
"Um..." Jane blinked, "nothing."
Ramona's excited expression froze. "Nothing? What do you mean nothing."
"I mean nothing. We didn't say much about that."
"You didn't talk about your feelings any more? You didn't ask each other to make it official? You didn't kiss?"
The disbelief in Ramona's tone was making Jane almost uncomfortable. Still, she shook her head.
"We didn't talk about that. We just talked."
"So you aren't in a relationship."
Jane blinked at her flat tone. "We aren't."
Ramona's smile was extinguished by now. "Why not?"
"We just didn't talk about it, I guess. We didn't want to make things awkward so we acted like we normally would."
Ramona wanted to cry. Or bang her head against the wall, either was fine. Then, she realised doing either of those things would be rather miserable. Once she had gotten over her initial thoughts and wishes, another came to mind – she needed to find Scorpius so they could cry about this together.
"I can't believe you. I'm going to find Scorpius."
"Stay where you are," Jane chuckled, slightly amused as Ramona sent her a look.
"I don't get it. You like him, he likes you. Don't you want to kiss him? Hold him? Call him yours?"
"Yeah, eventually," she admitted, "for now, I like the pace we are setting. I like knowing he feels the same way. I don't want to rush things."
