When Drew arrived, we went across the street to a small Dairy Queen, and ate some ice cream.
“So, why are you at the hospital exactly?” Drew asks.
“Well, when… you know. My mom was pregnant and they saved the baby, its a girl but she is in bad shape. She has cancer and can't hear that well, and other things.”
“Wow. Whats her name?”
“Ellie, I named her after my Great-Grandma, on my dads side.”
“Cool! You will have to show me her when we get back.”
“Gladly, she has the brightest smile and I can already tell she is brave and a fighter. She is a miracle, all the doctors are shocked that she’s still alive. She hasn't given up. She is in really bad shape right now, so she won't look as good as she normally does. She is beautiful. We should probably head back though, I told you how protective Nana is. Im surprised she even let me go out of the room. That means she trusts you.” I smile, and so does he.
As we are walking back, I fill him in on everything he missed, which was a lot since I haven't talked to him for a whole year.
We get to Ellies room and she is taking a nap but as soon as I walked in the room she seemed to know that I was there and burst awake and looked straight at us and her big open mouth smile spread across her face.
“Hey sweetie, how are you?” I ask, then she laughs.
“Hi Ellie. Its nice to meet you. Your awesome sister has told me wonderful things about you. They were all true, you are beautiful.” She smiles again
“Isn't she so precious?” I smile.
“Definitely, and that smile of hers. She gets it from her sister.” He blushes.
“Thanks.” I smile “We should probably leave the room and let her sleep.”
“Alright, bye Ellie!” Ellie giggles then looks at me.
“Goodbye, baby” she smiles then closes her eyes
“Hey Izz, I gotta go soon, my mom just texted me and said it was time to go. Are you gonna be okay?”
“Ya, I am so glad you came, Drew, I missed you.”
“You too. I forgot how fun you were, Im sorry I stopped talking to you. I was stupid.”
“Its fine. I’ll see you later.” Drew waves bye and walks toward his mom.
Later on, my nana and I were sitting on a bench in the waiting room because we were told that we could go home and Ellie is a lot better, she will just have checkups every month. Gramps is doing fine but they said to keep an eye on him, so we are waiting for the nurse to tell us we can go. After 15 minutes she still didn't come and we were starting to get worried, but the nurse comes out of Gramps room and has a spine chilling look. I look at Nana and she is crying and I haven't seen her cry since my parents died. Thats when I know that Gramps wasn't coming home with us. The nurse gets to us and says we should follow her. Gramps was laying on the bed asleep...at least I think he is. He looks horrible, he's pale and has dark circles under his eyes. "Ted? Honey, its okay. Im right here." Then he opens his eyes just enough to see Nana and me then wiggles his fingers. He tries his best to put a half smile on his face then whispers "I love you two" and Nana tells him not to speak and that she loves him to. I walk up to Gramps and said I love you too. Hes disappearing on me just like my parents did. " You can't do this."I cry
Then the machine next to him starts doing one long beep and i'm pretty sure I know what that means. The doctors rush in and say we have to leave the room. By then i'm bawling my eyes out and Nana is just staring at the wall. "Nana, we have to go! Come on!" I sob.
I have to pull her out of the room by her arm.
"Honey, go get Ellie, we are going home."
"What? NO! Gramps is in their, im staying."
"Huh? No, Ted is right here, he is waiting on you."
Gramps is saying bye to us, and I know he is gone.
"Goodbye Gramps, I will take care of Nana for you." I cry. I can see him now, he nods and seems to say that it will be okay. Im still crying and Nana is on the floor because she just understood what happened. Two minutes later the doctors come out and tell us the news. Gramps is dead. He left me. He left Nana. He left Ellie. It turns out he has been sick for a couple of months now but didn't want anyone to worry. He is gone, just like everyone else.
