When the police get into the house, the first thing they do is lift Uncle Bryan up and carry him out of the house. Once they got me out of the basement, they took me outside to see my Grandpa waiting for me.
“Isabelle! Oh my gosh! I am so happy to see you.”
There are tears rolling down his face and his eyes are red and puffy. He has always been sensitive, but never like this. He looks miserable. Then it hit me, his daughter is dead, my mama is dead.I couldn’t handle it, I burst into tears and jumped into Grandpa’s arms.
“They are gone! He did this, Grandpa! Uncle Bryan killed them! He tried to kill me!”
We both just sat there on the dewy grass crying together. My parents will never see the beautiful blessing of a sun or the stars ever again. They won’t be there at my 16th birthday, my graduation, or my wedding. My own kids will never meet their moms parents.
“Sir, could we speak to you please?” said the police officer.
“Oh, uhh yes.”
They walk far enough to where they think I can’t hear them but I moved closer.
“We were just informed that the woman was pregnant and we may be able to save the baby. Would you like us to save it?”
“I don’t think that is a question you should be asking me. You should ask that crying girl over there. It would be her sibling.”
“Yes sir. I will ask her right away.”
“Uh, just give her some time to vent, her parents literally just died a half-an-hour ago.”
“I will give her time, but we need to know very soon, so the baby doesn’t die.”
Thats when I know that if I don’t take this risk then I will never have a trace of my parents left. I would be the only one. Then the police officer came over to me and asked immediately.
“Yes! Please. Please! Save the baby!” I cried.
“Yes mam’, I will go tell them right away.”
Thats when Grandpa walked up to me with the saddest look on his face. I don’t think I have ever seen someone with this much pain.
“Are you okay? Lets go home, Nana is waiting for us.”
“No! We have to wait for the baby! I don’t know why Mama never told me about the baby but, It is all I have left so I have to do this.”
“Honey, I don’t think they knew. They didn’t even tell me. We will wait, but we are staying outside. They will have to bring the baby to us.”
“Ok, can we wait in the car, because I am kinda chilly. I hope it is a girl. What do you want it to be.”
“I want it to be a girl, so you will have a friend. Even if that friend is 13 years younger than you.”
We both walk side-by-side, at this moment I feel nothing. I am lost. I don’t know what to do with my life. I don’t want to live with my Grandparents, I want to live my with my parents. I don’t want this life for my soon-to-be sibling. He-or-she deserves better, they should know who their mom and dad are. They had wonderful ones. Probably the best ones anyone can have.
An hour later, they were able to safely get the baby out (its a girl!) and have her cleaned up and dressed her. I got to name her and I knew exactly what her name was going to be. Ellie. My second choice for Ellie was Eve, like Adam and Eve. Ellie was my dads Grandmas name and I love that name and think it has a great story. Grandpa loves the name and I feel like dad would have been proud of me. He would always talk about Great-Grandma but I never got to meet her. He says she was the sweetest thing and was the only one in the family with red hair. They think she got it from my Great-cousin Elizabeth that died when she was 13 of Lymphoma.
