Authors note:

Hey,

It might seem like I am not getting to the plot of the story very quickly, but I just want to make sure I give enough background so that you feel like you know the characters personally.

“Honey, it is time for you to wake up,” my Mother says, opening up my bedroom door and quietly walking into my room.

“I am already up Mom,” I answer, stepping out of my closet showered and dressed.

“Wow, you are already up? I never thought I would see the day when you woke up on time for school,” she says back to me, giving me a taunting eye roll.

“Whatever, don’t act like this is the first time that I have woken up without your help,” linking my arm with hers, I guide her down the steps and towards the kitchen.

“Good morning, Bro,” I say, ruffling his hair. Looking up from his breakfast, he gives me a playful glare and straightens up his hair.

“Morning, Sis. Did you sleep well?”

Sitting down beside him, I take a gulp of my orange juice before answering, “Yeah, what about you?”

“Same here, I was exhausted after kicking your butt yesterday,” he says, provokingly.

Punching him lightly on the shoulder, “Didn’t I tell you yesterday that I let you win; as if a scrawny boy like you could beat me,” I say to him, flexing my arm muscles jokingly

“We’ll see who is scrawny when I kick your butt in the re-match after school.”

“Uh-huh, whatever you say, Kid,” giving my Mother and Brother a kiss on the cheek, I go outside to wait for my bus.

After waiting a couple of minutes in the silence, I decide that the time would go by a lot faster if I am listening to some music. Digging around in my bag, I finally come across my iPod and earphones; looking through my playlists, I select the song ‘Sorry for Party Rocking’ by LMFAO.

Dancing around a little I start to sing along with the song,

“If you show up already tore up this is what you say

Sorry for party rocking

And if you blacked out with your sack out this is what you say

Sorry for party rocking

And if you throw up in ya hoes cup this is what you say

Sorry for party rocking

And if she has a hissy fit cause your whiskey dick this is what you say

Sorry for party rocking.”

Having sung my favorite party, I change the song to Call Your Girlfriend by Robyn. I love this song, but I especially love the cover done by Lennon and Maisy Stella. Just as the song ends my bus pulls up, walking up the steps of the bus I take a seat next to a freshman.

“Hey, Ashlyn,” the freshman says.

“Hey, Clarice, how have you been?” I ask her politely.

“I’ve been better. So, I hear that Thea is going out with that new guy today,” she says, looking to me for information.

“Oh, really?” I ask, not trying to feed into the gossip mill

“What is it not true?”

“It might be true, I haven’t heard anything about it though,” I tell her, lying through my teeth. ‘I promise to make up for this,’ I tell myself, feeling guilty that I have lied to her.

“Oh, okay,” she says, ending our conversation. Looking out of the window the rest of the time, I wait for the bus ride to be over so I can get away from Clarice and her scrutinizing gaze.

A sigh of relief escapes my mouth as soon as we get to the school, getting off of the bus I can finally breathe without being stared at by Clarice. Hurrying towards the entrance, I begin searching for anyone that I would like to talk to before the school bell rings; deciding against searching for any of my friends, I instead head towards my locker—wanting to take a break from conversing with people.

“What books do I need?” I ask myself repeatedly, searching my locker for my first period textbook and notes.

“You will probably need your Calculus books and notes,” jumping from the sudden voice in my ear, I turn towards Thea with a grin on my face.

“You almost gave me a heart attack,” she just laughs and shakes her head.

“If you are about to have a heart attack at age eighteen, then you seriously need to consider your dieting and exercising habits,” she says with a smile.

Feigning hurt, I ask, “Are you saying I am fat?”

“All I am saying is that, ‘You are what you eat,’” laughing, I grab my Calculus book out of my locker.

“In all seriousness though, if you are fat then I am a donkey.”

My reply was, “Heehah.”

“Whatever, you dork, let’s just go to class,” she says, playfully giving me the finger.

“What movie are you and Tanner going to tonight?” I ask her with interest, as we walk to class.

“I am not sure; we were talking about maybe going to see the movie Django--” before she can even finish talking, I interrupt her.

“Don’t go to see that, it is awful. If I were you, I would go see the Hobbit—it looks like it is going to be really good.”

“We’ll probably end up going to see that then, because Tanner said he didn’t care what movie we saw as long as I was watching the movie with him,” I ‘aww’ at that as her eyes glaze over.

“Don’t think too hard, you might hurt yourself,” I say, bringing her at of her thoughts.

“‘Don’t think too hard,’” she mocks, sticking her tongue out at me.

------- After School -------

“Ash, are you sure that you don’t want to come to the movies with Tanner and I?” Thea asks for the millionth time today.

“Thea, I AM SURE; plus, I already promised Kasper that we would play Mario Kart together as soon as we get home from school,” nodding her head at my answer, she says goodbye to me and drives home to get ready for her date.

As she leaves, I make sure to send her a text saying “I do expect a play-by-play of the entire night, though, when you get home ;)”
