three days rolled by quickly, i didn't have anything to pack other than my two bags so that was a relief. id also need to do a grocery trip after i got myself set up at the new house. i texted gus that i was on my way over.
aspen
on my way now, i'll be there in around 20 minutes
gus
sounds good see u then
i packed up my stuff and started the hike to the new house with all my bags hanging off of me like a little pack mule. the walk was a lot worse when you had to drag heavy bags along with you on a hot day. i got a few strange looks for walking on residential streets with suitcases.
i'd finally reached the house's driveway, gus was sitting on the front step. he noticed me arrive and put out the cigarette in his hand. "aspen! hey" he greeted me. "hi" i smiled, relieved to finally put the bags down. "did you walk here?" he asked, looking around and noticing the absence of a vehicle. "yeah" i told him. "with the bags?" he asked, pointing to them. "yeah" i said again.
"why didn't you text me? we woulda helped you move your stuff if we'd have known" gus said, as if i should have known to ask. "oh, i just didn't want to bother you" i said. "nah, you're one of us now you can't bother us" he told me, grabbing one bag and walking me inside. "this all you brought?" he asked me. "uh, yeah" i said, shyly looking down at my limited amount of belongings. "ah okay, if you need anything just let me know. i got you covered" gus offered me. he'd been very welcoming and kind hearted so far. "oh, thanks" i told him.
i'm not quite sure what he meant by that, but gus was super kind. "what grocery stores are near here? i have to get some food too" i asked gus, that would be my first order of business. "there's a few, i can take you if you want? just so you can get used to the new area?" gus offered. "that'd be great actually, thanks" i smiled, he was literally so nice. "also, write your name on anything you aren't willing to share. we've all been living together forever so we just kinda share and eat whatever" gus said. "okay, good to know" i made a note in my head.
gus walked my up to my room, "well, i'll let ya get settled in. come grab me, or anyone if you need anything" gus told me, leaning against the door frame. "okay thank you" i smiled, opening up my bags. it didn't take me all that long to put my clothes and various products away.
i stepped back to look at the finished product, which wasn't really different than when i started aside from a few things on top of the dresser. the last guy had left a lamp, curtains and a trash can. i still need bedding, kind of forgot about that.
i left my room to go search for gus, i knocked on his door but there was no answer. i went down to the kitchen area and he was laying on the couch in the living room. "how's setting up going?" he asked "good, i'm done now. i also totally forgot i need bedding and pillows, maybe we could find some while we're out?" i asked him.
"oh yeah totally, that's probably a good thing to have. if we can't find any you can have my bed and i'll stay on the couch until you get some" he offered. "thanks, that's super nice of you. hopefully i'll find some today" i said. "you wanna go now?" he asked. "if you're not busy, sure" i said.
gus grabbed his keys, i followed him out to his car. "thanks by the way, for all of this. i definitely appreciate the little extras until i get back on my feet" i thanked gus, he really had been super kind. "no worries at all" he said. "target work? can kinda get everything in one stop" he asked. "whatever's close" i said.
"so why'd you move to la with basically nothing?" he asked. "i just wanted a new life, wanted to find myself" i told him. gus chuckled a little, "that's what everyone says. it's not quite like the moves though eh?". "not at all" i said. "why'd you move here, or you and your friends?" i asked. "music" he said "you sing?" i asked. "kinda, well rap" he said. "i didn't know that, that's really cool though. how's it going?" i asked, interested in his life. "not too terribly actually. you never heard of lil peep?" he joked. "wel i have now" i told him. "yeah it's always what i've wanted to do, pursuing it has been the best thing ever. tracy raps too, ben and cody produce" he told me.
"quite the music household you have going on. unfortunately i will add absolutely nothing" i joked, the only singing you'd hear out of me is when i'm drunk. "yeah we've got a mini studio set up thing in the basement. not exactly elegant but it works" he said.
"so when do i get to listen?" i asked, now intrigued. "well, stick around with me and maybe i'll show you a song" he said. "i guess i'll have to" i told him. gus pulled into the target parking lot, trying to her as close to the door as he could. "here we are" he said.
"aspen" gus stopped me before i got out of the car, "yeah?" i asked. "im serious, if you ever need help with anything or need something covered. i got you, promise" he told me. "okay, thanks gus. i appreciate it" i said, i don't know why he was so adamant about it but at least he was a good person.
gus pushed the cart around while i put all of my groceries in. we walked up and down each aisle to see what i wanted, i had no list. "i think that just about covers it" i said, when we reached the last food aisle. "house stuff now?" gus asked. "yep" i told him.
i picked out a plain white bedspread with thin grey stripes and some matching pillows and sheets. i got a couple of extra decorations to help tie the room together. i stopped and looked at the pile in the cart. "i think that's everything" i told him. i took the cart over to the cashes. as she scanned each item my anxiety increased watching the total go up and up and up. "that comes to $756.49" she told me. "debit" i said. sorry bank account. hopefully this would last me a while though.
gus took us home, "i'll show you the studio?" he asked when we got back in the driveway. "i'd like that" i told him. he opened a door i never even realized was there and took me down the creaky stairs. cody was sitting at the table with his laptop. "so this is where you guys run off to?" i asker. "usually" gus said.
"you gonna show her a song?" cody asked. "you wanna hear one?" gus asked. "of course" i said. "here's one cody and i have been working on. hellboy" gus said, leaning over cody's shoulder to play something on the computer.
can this be him?
the one i have waited centuries to see?
how strange
so far from his path that i barely see the promise of glory
can this be him, this hellboy?
the song ended, i really enjoyed his music. his style and sound was something super unique i had never heard anywhere before. "i like it, you're talented" i told gus, "you too" i said to cody. "thanks boo" he said. boo? a little odd but considering i hardly knew him i just assumed that's how he talked to everybody.
i left cody and gus in the basement to go put all of my new stuff away, the place felt more home-y already with the addition of a few simple items to the room.
