i started my new job today, i was excited but also a little nervous. i'd worked a few similar jobs before, so at least it wasn't brand new territory. "you good?" ben asked me, watching me pace the kitchen. "yeah just nervous" i told him. "don't be, you'll do great" he told me.
"thanks ben, i gotta get going" i said, heading for the door. it was a bit too far to walk, so bus it is. i heard foot steps thudding down the hall behind me, "woah woah woah, leaving without saying bye to me?" gus asked. "well, yeah i guess so" i told him. he wasn't around as i was leaving, why would i?
"well, bye" i said, moving around him so i could her out of the door. he stopped me again, "have a good day, you have everything?" he asked. "yes mother" i rolled my eyes, "now move, i'll miss the bus" i told him. "bus?" he asked, "yeah, too far of a walk" i told him. "no no, you're not taking the bus" he said. i looked at him confused. "i'm driving you" he said, grabbing his keys off the hook on the wall. "oh, okay. thanks then" i told him.
"you're gonna like this job?" he asked, once we got on the road. "yeah, i went to school for it" i told him. "oh so she's smart and pretty" he said. "huh?" i asked, did i just hear him right? "you think i'm pretty?" i asked. "yeah" he said, not leading onto anything else.
"someone's calling you" i said, pointing to his phone on the dash. 'emma' showing up across the screen. he glanced to see who it was, declining it. maybe that's the girl he's been posting about. "here ya are" gus said, pulling up to the front door. "well thanks for the ride" i said. "see you at home" i told him. "see ya, have a good day boo" he told me. "are you gonna stop calling me that?" i asked him. "why?" he asked. "i'm not your boo" i said, closing the door.

he was being a little ridiculous, we weren't anything and he clearly had another girl, or girls on the go.
"aspen?" the lady at the desk asked. "that's me" i smiled. "welcome, i'll bring you to the back. christie is waiting for you, she'll get you your uniform and start your training" the lady told me. "okay, thanks" i smiled and followed her.
christie, the manager took me through the routine of the day and showed me everything i would need to know. she stayed with me the whole day, not doubting my abilities but just making everything was going smoothly.
i did a couple sets of nails on my shift, they all turned out well. i was super happy to be back doing something i like. "you've got some talent" christie told me. "thank you" i smiled.

my shift went well, i already felt settled in plus everyone there was really nice. i picked up my phone for the first time since the start of my shift, i'd have to figure out the bus route home.

i stood outside, gus' car pulled up outside about 15 minutes later. i got into the passenger seat, putting my bag in the back. "you enjoy your first day? do anything exciting?" he asked. "yeah it was fun. i did a bunch of nails, that's my favourite thing" i told him. "glad you had fun. you can paint my nails" he said. "really?" i asked. "yeah bet" he said.
"thanks for the ride, by the way. first thing on my savings list is a car" i told him. "no worries, i can drive you anytime, i like our little time together" he said.
we got home, there was already a few cars parked around the house and people on the porch. "oh it already started" i said. "yeah, come have a drink with me" he said, pulling me inside. i honestly didn't really feel like a party, but i didn't have much of a choice.
gus poured me a random concoction, handing me the red cup. "thanks" i took the cup and took a sip. "oh jesus what is that?" i asked, not expecting something so strong. "it's my special 'get hammered' drink" gus said. "oh joy" i said, sarcastically. gus and i sat down on the couch, he pulled me half into his lap with his arm tightly around me. the liquor was hitting me and i just let it happen.
tracy walked in, raising his eyebrows at gus and i. i just shook my head at him, nothing to see. people constantly walked in and out of the room, never seeing the same face twice. the girls in particular giving me dirty looks for being with gus. "this is your idea of small?" i asked gus. "yeah it's not buzzing too badly" he said. what other kinds of parties were they throwing?
"i'm gonna go upstairs for a second" i said, needing a break from the people and noise. "going so soon?" gus asked. "i'll be back" i told him. i went up to my room and laid on my bed for a few minutes, trying to tune out the noise. once my brain had settled a little i went back downstairs.
gus was on the same spot on the couch, this time with some girl i'd never seen on his lap, making out with her. i didn't even bother, nor was i surprised. i walked out onto the front step, not even bothering with gus. cody and ben were sitting on the step when i walked out, "hey" they both said.
"hey" i sighed. i took the cigarette out of ben's hand, taking a long drag off of it. "you good?" he asked. "yeah" i said, "mhm" cody mumbled. "gus is just like...confusing, at one second he's all over me amd calling me boo and like being at my every disposal and then the next second he's got another girl on his lap? like i don't care we obviously aren't together i just don't get it" i ranted. "yeah" ben said, "that's just like—that way he is?" ben said. "oh, i see" i told him.
"he's always been like that" cody said. "i think i'm gonna head upstairs. i'm not feeling it anymore" i said. "aight, see you later" ben said.
i went upstairs and changed into some sweats and took my makeup off. i put in some headphone and put on netflix, i just felt like relaxing alone right now.
