chapter nine, MIDNIGHT SWIMMING

Elaine Tate watched Kiara from the passenger side of the girl's truck, she smiled to herself and looked down. She had found the group of people she never thought she would.

Elaine wouldn't say she was inexperienced in friendships or relationships but when it came to a crush or someone she actually liked, now, she'd shut down. She'd decide to distance herself from the person because it's how she kept from getting hurt.

The girl had seen friendships like the pogues on tv shows and movies and always wondered if it were true, if there really were friendships that were that strong.

She had a few friends, but she didn't really think she had any friends back in Arizona that would go on a glorified treasure hunt with her. There was only one person she'd ever been this close with before other than Sam. And it terrified her.

Kiara and Elaine decided to meet back up with the boys and head over to the wreck to get something to eat. The sun had completely set and the stars were shining in the sky.

"what I would do to a beer and shrimp and grits right now" JJ let out as they got there, all of pogues getting out of the van. "It would not be pretty," Pope added as he shut the doors.

Kiara walked over to Elaine and linked arms with the girl, sending her a smile as they walked up the steps. The pair entered the restaurant together. "hey dad" Kiara spoke, and Elaine looked up at the girl's dad, a smile etched onto her face.

"This is Sam's younger sister Laney," Kiara told her dad and he smiled at her. "Hi, Laney, nice to meet you"

"Nice to meet you too" She greeted him before Kiara signalled to a table.

"So how's it going?" Kiara asked her dad, walking down the bar to the opening at the counter. Elaine continued walking, the boys close behind her. "So hungry," JJ mumbled, earning a few laughs.

Kiara talked to her dad another minute before turning to look at us. "sit down" She told the four and JJ let out a breath as if he was waiting for hours to hear that.

Elaine sat with the boys, picking fries out of one of the baskets on the table. She cringed as she watched the boys stuff their faces with food. JJ and John B throwing fries across the table at each other. JJ even went as far as to pick up one of the fries from the ground and eat it.

"JJ that is disgusting," Elaine said to the boy, scrunching up her face as he shrugged and continued to eat.

"Here princess" JJ said before tossing her a fry. She laughed as she caught it in her mouth, the boys hollering from around her.

Elaine Tate truly could not remember the last time she had laughed this much. And while normally this would have killed her mood and caused her to space out, her mind barely stalled.
