chapter sixteen, A NIGHT OF WORYR
Elaine Tate was frozen. The girl huddled next to JJ as they waited for help. The blonde's body heat warmed the brunette girl, spreading a rather numb feeling though her body. The wait for help felt incredibly long however in reality, in real-time, when a girl wasn't watching the boy she had feelings for in pain, it was pretty fast.
Help arrived shortly after and apart from asking what happened, the first thing they asked was if any of the teenagers were going with him. Before anyone could say anything Sarah stood and offered to go with him. Laney didn't have the energy to fight and neither did the others so they kept quiet as they watched the boy get put on the stretcher and into the ambulance.
Sarah's blonde hair waved in the wind as she jumped in behind him, her hands instantly grabbing onto his. Elaine let her eyes flutter shut, reminding herself that if John B was with her, he would've probably wanted that anyway.
She didn't have it in her to fight. It was what was best. If he and Sarah were together maybe that would make the decision easier on the brunette.
The drive back to Sam's made her feel sick, she just wanted this night to be over. She sat, still leaning on JJ, the boy rubbing mindless circles on her back to help calm both of them down. Everyone was on edge.
"Hey! I heard something happened out at Hawks Nest" Sam yelled as he ran from the house to meet the pogues. Relief spreading through his body at the sight of his sister. She was okay, at least physically.
"Topper pushed him off, I'm not sure what else happened. Sarah was pretty messed up when we got there" Pope told the boy as they walked into the house. Their voices disappeared behind the door. He and Sam went into the kitchen as JJ and Laney slowly made their way down the hall to her room. Kiara close behind the pair. Pope didn't take long in the kitchen with Sam either. All of the pogues just ready to put that day in the past.
The others were talking about John B and what they thought was going to happen, and at some point Laney just blocked their voices from her head. She was feeling suffocated.
When the girl realized she had left the room, her steps had already brought her to the back deck. The cool breeze making her dress flow around her body. She took in the fresh air, trying to get John B off her mind. Just long enough for her to relax a bit.
She walked out to the dock, the grass cold on her bare feet. She watched the water, the glimmering light bouncing off of it. She felt calmer, the moment reminding her of a few nights prior after they got back from the graveyard.
Elaine's eyes fell on the dock next to hers, the one in John B's yard. She watched the spot they had stood as if to try and see the two of them there.
Her brain almost didn't register Kiara's footsteps as they got closer to her, the girl making her way over. "Hey" Her voice was hushed, almost a whisper.
