chapter thirty nine, THE ARREST OF WARD CAMERON

Elaine Tate sat in the passenger seat of Madison's car in silence. She would have walked herself if it hadn't been pouring rain just to avoid the tension between the two. Madison let out an audible huff as she pulled towards the store. The girl was upset, to put it lightly.

It's not like Laney could just break it off as she got out of the girl's car. She needed to talk to her, because Elaine's sober mind could not fathom treating the girl with such cruelty.

Their earlier conversation cut off by the girls ringing phone, interrupting Laney from getting to the point. Her mind falling on the encounter as Madison drove.

"so, I know you didn't really want to talk about it but, is something going on between you and John B?" Madison asked as the two girls got out of the car, walking down the beach.

"what do you mean?" Elaine turned towards the girl.

"the two of you seem like you're fighting" Madison stated, her eyes looking out at the water in front of them.

"We kind of are, he just said some stuff and we're trying to work that out," She told the girl, and it was the truth.

"Well I hope you figure it out, I don't like seeing you upset" Madison leaned over and kissed her cheek. Laney clenched her jaw lightly and put a forced smile on her face. "Sorry, I guess since we aren't dating I shouldn't-"

"Listen, I uh, I'll admit, I didn't think you thought we were anything other than hookups. You seemed to understand what was going on and I just thought you knew"

"I'm just confused. You were the one who kissed me in the water at my house. You never said you were just looking for casual"

"I guess I just figured that when the only time we really saw each other was at night and when we weren't sober that it was clear to you, that's on me though" Elaine looked down at her hands.

The silence consumed the pair and Laney tried to push the awkward feeling away. When her phone went off she almost thanked God out loud.

"Who is it?" Madison questioned, meeting the girl's eyes.

"uh, it's Pope. He needs me to meet them at his dad's store" Elaine told Madison as she read the text.

"uh, okay" They both turned, moving towards where they parked. Eliane planned on just grabbing her jacket to avoid the awkwardness but Madison stopped halfway there.

"I just don't get it" She let out and Elaine raised her brow. "you let me talk about my dreams and what I wanted to do in the future. You let me open up to you about stuff. And that was all just a hookup?" She sighed and ran a hand through her hair.
