chapter fifteen, COSTUME PARTY
Elaine's steps lead her up the path of Kiara's house, greeted at the door by Anna. "Laney," She said, smiling warmly at the teenager. According to Kiara, her mother didn't like any of her friends apart from her. Kiara always chucked it down to the fact Laney was a girl and Anna happened to like her brother.
"Kiara's just up in her room if you want to go up," Anna told her, moving out of the doorway to let her in. The stairs felt cold against the girl's feet and she was sure her clothes were still stuck to her body.
"Elle" Kiara called out, looking at her with a smile. "what happened?" She asked when she took a look at Laney's half-damp hair and the clothes that clung to her body.
"me, JJ and John B went for a swim," She answered sarcastically and Kiara laughed. "You can go take a shower if you want," She offered, leaning her head towards the bathroom attached to her room. Elaine smiled and thanked her before heading in.
Kiara went to get a bag for the girl's arm while the water warmed up which Laney thanked her for before wrapping it around the splint on her arm. The water felt therapeutic against her cold skin. She didn't stay in for long, just enough to wash up and get clean. Enjoying the short shower she had before wrapping herself in one of Kiara's towels.
"oh, wow" She let out as she stepped out of the bathroom, Kiara standing in front of the mirror with a purple dress adorning her body. "you get one too," Kiara said, mocking me like a five-year-old kid would.
It didn't take long for the girls to get ready, both helping each other out with the other's hair. Kiara disappeared into her closet before emerging with a baby blue floor-length dress.
"Here ya go, my mom freaked when she found out you were coming and went and bought you the dress," Kiara told her and she got a bit embarrassed.
"she didn't mean to buy it because of money, she just likes to go all out for my friends when she likes them" Kiara reassured Laney as she handed her the dress. She slipped away into the bathroom to get dressed.
"Wow," Kiara let out when she walked out of the bathroom. "bad wow?" She questioned as she stood by Kiara in the mirror.
"no, good wow. Good wow," Kiara gushed, reaching for the flower crown that went with it.
They stood in the mirror and looked at themselves and no matter how many times Laney told Kiara she looked beautiful in the dress, Kiara hated it.
"This is disgusting" She let out.
"I know, it's just horrible. I'm asking you to relax and go to a fun party" Anna said, mocking her daughter. Laney let out a small laugh at Kiara's reaction.
"I look like a bourgeoisie pig" Kiara uttered, her hatred for the dress and party coming out in pogue fashion.
"will you please not worry about socio-economic injustice for one night?" Anna pleaded.
