Chapter 9: Asking for numbers 6/9

"Do you like anyone?" Jake asked Yun, somewhat abruptly to the unsuspecting girl who was engrossed in her book as they waited for the arrival of Teacher Che.

 She turned her head to consider Jake, "No. Why?"

"I was just curious" he said, stretching out his arms to release his tired limbs that hand't fully woken yet that day.

"No c'mon?" She persisted, "Why do you want to know?"

"Let's say I know a guy..."

"Right?"

"...who likes you. What would they have to do to get you to like them back?"

Yun scrunched her face in thought, "I'm not sure - be nice, kind, smart, funny". She reeled off the usual  wish list. "Sure" Jake said, "but what about how you would want them to approach you?".

Yun again, mulled on this, "They'd just have to be forthright and ask me, there's no point in shying away. If you're going to ask me out, right now you're being rather aloof." Jake laughed, whilst defending himself "no, no - I don't, I'm just doing research".

"So I spoke to Yun" Jake said, he and Sunghoon had just left Jay at his shrub. "About?" Sunghoon queried. "What she's looking for in a guy and how one should approach her". Jake answered causing Sunghoon to gulp, "and why did you do that Jaeyun?"

"You said you liked her?"

"No I didn't" Sunghoon countered.

"Alright, not explicitly, but you said you were trying to show off to her yesterday. "

"Ah... I forgot you sit next to her" after a brief pause Sunghoon realised the correct thing was to enquire further, "well, what did she say? Did you tell her I liked her?"

"Hahaha, no, no - I know how to keep a secret. She said she wanted someone funny, smart and kind"

"Isn't that what everyone wants?"

"Yes, we're all very basic."

"So nothing more specific?"

"No, although she probably wants someone good looking?"

"She said that?"

"No, but I can read between the lines, she wants the same as everyone else, Prince Charming to rush her off her feet. I think you meet the bill"

Scratching his head, Sunghoon cautioned, "But I'm not that smart - you've never seen my grades"

"Maybe not but you can tell when someone's dumb or not, you might not be academic but you think about yourself enough that suggests to me there's a fair bit more going on in there then you're letting on". Jake ruffled Sunghoon's dyed hair to signal that he was talking about his head.

"Haha, well, what should I do?"

"Yun wants someone to be up front with her, so, just ask her out"

"Oh... But I don't have her number" Sunghoon's response caused Jake to roll his eyes in an exaggerated fashion. "Yeah, maybe you're not that smart"

"Hey!" Sunghoon protested Jake's insult.

"THEN YOU ASK FOR HER NUMBER LIKE A MAN!" Jake shouted at his friend - Sunghoon gulped, again.
