Chapter 15

Thomas allowed a few minutes to pass before following Newt outside the room. He was more shocked than hurt by what just happened. It was unlike Newt to react that way.

He went to the rooftop and saw Newt sitting idly on the railing. Newt noticed and waited for Thomas to get closer before finally speaking.

"Sorry about that. Back there." He began as he fumbled with his fingers.
"I guess I couldn't hide this anymore." He pulled up his sleeve to reveal the grisly discoloration on his right forearm. The black and blue nerves were bulging and throbbing against his pale skin. It took everything in Thomas to not let a shout of anguish. Cara had told him that Newt wasn't immune, why didn't he keep a close eye on the boy? Thomas blamed himself once again.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He said after a period of silence.
"Didn't think it would make any difference. All I know is that WICKED must have put me in that maze for a reason. Maybe it was literally just so they could tell the difference between immunes like you and people like me." Newt shrugged.
"You know we can still fix this, Newt. Okay? We can." Thomas tried to convince Newt, but most of all himself.
"Don't worry about me. This is about Minho and Cara." The boy actually didn't worry about his life as much as he did about Cara's.
"I can't. I can't live with myself, Tommy." Newt said after a pause. "Knowing that they have her, doing who the hell knows with her...and Minho too. I don't even want to think about it.  She needs us, they need us. And I...I need her." Newt took a deep breath as tears threatened to fall.
"I don't have much time, Tommy. We both know that. And, and I'm going to hold on to myself, to no matter how little is left of my sanity until I'm sure that she's safe. So please, if there's the slightest chance that we can save them, we can get them out of there, then we have to take that. No matter what the cost." Newt pleaded.

"Okay. I hear you." Thomas nodded his head knowing that he had to betray the girl that he loves in order to save Minho and Cara, the girl his best friend loves. He now had two promises to keep as he also promised Cara that he will do whatever it takes to save Newt. God knows he couldn't live with himself if he wasn't able to keep both.
