Chapter 18

3rd Person POV

As soon as dusk came, the plan to save Minho and Cara was set in motion. Gally, Newt, and Thomas once again travelled to the last city to kidnap Teresa. The plan was for Thomas to lure Teresa in. Once she's followed him far enough, they'll put a sack over her head and transport her back to Lawrence's place at the outskirts of the city.

"Make sure that nobody else notices you. Yeah?" Gally orders Thomas before they part ways.
"I don't need orders from you." Thomas replied icily.
"There's no time for this right now. Be careful, Tommy." Newt says. And with that Thomas puts his hood over his head and walks away. Gally sits down on the ground and takes a swig of his water as Newt paces around.
"How did they get her?" Gally asks Newt after some time. Cara was his best friend and losing her scared Gally almost as much as it scared Newt.
"One minute she was just running beside me. The next she was...not. I should have noticed. I thought I was holding her hand." Newt fidgeted with his right arm. "If I let her go first to keep her in my line of sigh-"
"Stop blaming yourself, Newt. If C was here, she'd be telling you the same thing." Gally tried to console the boy in his own, stoic manner. Newt just nodded his head in response, unable to do what Gally just said. Another silence followed.
"She doesn't hate you, y'know. She never did. Even after you got stung and became such a dick." Newt told Gally as he sat down a few meters beside him.
"Even after I killed Chuck?" Gally challenged expecting to hear a different answer.
"Even after that." Newt answered to Gally's surprise. Gally shook his head in sorrow and disbelief.
