The sound of butter sizzling in the pan is somewhat comforting. I turn to grab my sandwich that is soon to be a panini and toss it onto the edged surface, pressing it down with my spatula. The scent of pesto, turkey, mozzarella, and basil makes its way to my nose, making my mouth water.
"Skye, this is facking amazing. Oh my god," the brunette girl praises from my kitchen table.
"I'm glad," I let out a laugh as I shake my head, finishing making my own sandwich. "But you need to quiet down. Mali just got home late last night and she's exhausted."
"Right, right. I'll be quiet." Charlotte smiles with a mouth full of panini in a way that says sorry.
Charlie and I both have Tuesdays off so we decided to go to the beach today. I still haven't been in my month of being here. It's mid-September, but an unusually warm day. It's twenty degrees celsius and after looking on Google that means it's about seventy degrees fahrenheit. It's going to be gorgeous out.
"Geeze, S. I'm gonna look disgusting in my bathing suit after eating this entire sandwich, but it's so good." Charlotte looks at me as if she's in pain and I can't help but laugh.
"Just eat so we can get going," I command as I kick her foot under the table.
I've been in this new friendship for three days now and it's been even better than I expected. We've been texting non stop and we constantly send each other funny vines and tumblr posts and tweets that we find. It turns out that we're an even better match than I could've imagined. We seem to have the same sense of humor, and she's really helped me come out of my shell.
I'm this weird mix between outgoing and shy where I'm super shy around strangers, but once I'm comfortable enough, you can't get me to shut up. She's managed to get me into that place of comfort in less than 48 hours. I was actually the one that invited her over, and she suggested a day out.
We sit and talk a little as we finish the early lunch/late breakfast that I made for us. I look over at the stove to see that the clock reads 11:24am. We should head out soon; the good tanning time is right now.
We go silent as we hear the turning of a knob, and I curse under my breath because we've woken up Mali-Koa. But, to my surprise, she walks out of her room fully awake.
"Morning, Skye. Who's your friend?" She asks with a smile on her face. It's weird hearing her speak to me, and I'm slow to react, so Charlotte replies for me.
"I'm Charlotte. Nice to meet you, Mali. We were gonna head to the beach for the day. Would you like to join?" I look at Charlotte who's just changed our plans entirely. I now have to spend the day getting to know my intimidatingly gorgeous roommate instead of relaxing.
"That sounds lovely.. I think I will join you. Let me get a bag ready!" She says excitedly as she runs back into her room. Now I feel bad for not wanting her to tag along because she really is so sweet.
Once her door is closed again, the girl next to me turns towards me and whispers, "You don't mind do you? I thought it'd be nice since she just got back from a business-y type trip."
I realize her point, and assure her that it's okay and a great idea. I start to gather my things and prepare for what I hope is going to be an incredible day.

The drive was quite short and we've already been laying out in the warmth of the sun for a little over two hours. I can feel the rays being absorbed by my skin, and I anticipate a nice tan by the end of the day. Summer was just ending back home when I left, and here, spring was just starting. I'm not that tan, but I plan to be after many more trips to this lovely beach. I'm actually not even sure which beach we're at, to be honest.
