"I remember you."
His words stun me. I know for a fact that I have never once actually met him. I wish I had, but I hadn't. We stand here in silence for a minute or two; me not knowing what to say, and Michael thinking.
"I swear I've seen you before. Not here in Australia though..." He's standing not even three feet from me as he thinks out loud. Suddenly, he bursts with excitement, clearly remembering me from somewhere that I can't think of either. "Virginia!!"
"Wha-" I don't think I've ever had a more astonished look on my face. What. the. actual. F uck.
"Rock Out With Your Socks Out! I remember you!" Michael Gordon Clifford remembers me from my fourth row seat at a concert a little over a year ago. Holy poop. "Come with me! The boys will never believe this!"
He grabs my hand. He grabs my hand, and starts walking at a fast pace in the direction the others had disappeared in. I almost don't have time to grab my carry-on. My stomach still feels so empty, but I don't care anymore. Michael Clifford is dragging me over to meet the band that saved me, and he's acting as though they all will remember me, too. Why would they remember me? I just don't understand.
I can't begin to figure out how he even knows my face. Yeah, sure, I had those moments like all girls do, swearing that one or more of the boys looked directly at me, and I did remember Luke just staring at me for a few seconds during Beside You. I'd just assumed that they'd forget about me within an hour while I'd remember it for the rest of my life.
Since neither of my hands are free to pinch my arm, I bite the inside of my cheek to make sure I'm not dreaming. I very possibly could still be on the plane. But biting my cheek does nothing; I'm awake and Michael Clifford has a death grip on my hand.
"Guys look who I found!" Michael yells excitedly as we walk up to the boys who, thank God, are sitting at a table waiting to order food. I may invite myself to eat lunch with them, and have them show me where the baggage claim is. Looks of confusion are on all three of the boys' faces. "From Virginia on tour last year. The girl we all talked about after the show. Remember?"
The words that just left his mouth have me in shock. I'd always been known around school for being pretty, but I personally don't see it. Not many boys ever tried to date me, so how could I honestly be as pretty as people liked to tell me. With loose golden curls that reached the middle of my back, light olive skin, and blue eyes with brown rings around the irises, I'd somehow caught the attention of the most beautiful human beings on the planet. I'm nothing special. There's thousands of girls out there with the same features as me that just make it work better.
I'm nothing special, so why does the love of my life and his best friends seem think so?
Suddenly, recognition appears on their faces. That's something I was not expecting to happen. I cannot believe that they remember me when I did nothing significant to warrant it. I didn't have a funny poster. I didn't throw anything on stage with my Twitter handle. And I didn't have meet and greet or sound check passes.
I feel heat rise to my cheeks as all of the boys stare me down with adorably goofy grins.
"I remember you! Mikey pointed you out and I couldn't stop staring," Calum states. He must have noticed how much I was blushing from his comment because he then adds, "uh, but um, not in a creepy way! I thought you were pretty!" He smiles at me, and I laugh a little at how cute this dark haired boy was when he fumbled with his words.
"Sorry that my friend isn't as suave as he likes to think. I remember you too, it was hard to not just stare at you the whole time." Luke makes this adorable cheesy smile at the end of his sentence and it kills me. It kind of looks like the nervously smiling emoji, and it just melted my heart.
"I didn't get to see you..." I hear a shy voice barely speak up over the noise of the airport around us. "Wish I had though." He has this sheepish smile as he looks up to meet my eyes, and his dimples become visible. Ashton was always so sweet.
I can't believe I've just met these four. What are the chances that I'd been flying into Sydney around the same time the boys were. I can't even begin to believe my luck.
"I knew the lads would recognize you!" Michael has this huge grin on his face, like he's so proud of himself for finding me. I'm still in awe from all of their comments. How does even one member of 5SOS recognize me from a concert over a year ago, let alone all four? I could never imagine this happening to me in a million years.
"Oh shit! I mean- I'm sorry. Um, I must have totally freaked you out. I just kind of grabbed you. I'm really sorry. Sorry." The blonde boy has his hands hiding most of his face in half mock, half serious embarrassment. "I didn't ask your name. As you may know, I'm Mikey."
"I am Calum"
"Hi, I'm Luke"
"And I'm Ashton."
"And we're 5 Seconds of Summer!" Calum adds in jokingly.
"So what's your name and how did you end up all the way in Australia from DC?" Ashton cuts right back into the conversation while pulling over a chair, patting it with his hand for me to sit.
"M-my name's Skye, and uh I'm taking a year to live here in Sydney before starting college because I wanted to have a little adventure I guess." It takes me forever to get the sentence out, and they must think I'm an idiot. Suddenly a hand laces its fingers with mine, and when I follow its arm up to a face, I'm met by Michael's adorable smile.
"Sounds like you're from America. Are you?" Luke asks, clearly acknowledging my accent, or, I guess, my lack of an Australian one.
"Looks like we've got ourselves a new friend!" The boys all show signs of excitement and invite me to eat with them. I have no clue what to order so Michael orders for me.
I notice that the entire time he keeps contact with me in some way. He held my hand, but once he dropped it he moved his leg so our knees were touching. Then at some other point he'd leaned into me just the tiniest bit; almost going unnoticed.
How the hell did something as unbelievable as this just happen to me?
