"Hey, Lulu," Lydia greeted softly. She sat beside me on the ground. I knew the conversation was serious. One: it was a class period and we were both skipping it. Two: I had never pictured her sitting on the dirty ground. "You okay? We noticed you weren't in class."
"I'm fine," I assured her. "Just... you know, boys."
Lydia chuckled. "Tell me about it."
"I know when people are jealous, they do things because of it," I started.
"I have a feeling there's a but," Lydia commented.
"But... he's been acting weird for weeks," I continued. "Ever since the night at the school. And I know boys get all hormone-y, but to the point where I- "
"Oh my, God." Lydia's eyes had widened "You're scared he was going to... rape you?" Lydia asked.
I nodded. "I'm really good at reading people. Gosh, yesterday he was so angry and he looked at me like - like I was just a meal, not his girlfriend."
"But... he was so nice before," Lydia said. "I remember the night we went bowling. And didn't you watch a movie and cuddle?"
"Well, yeah... but the cuddling turned into a make-out session- "
"A make-out session is fine," Lydia spoke and I gave her an annoyed look. "Well, if you felt comfortable that is," she added.
"It was all happening too fast," I went on. "I want someone who doesn't always think about that. Who cares more about the intellectual relationship instead of the physical."
"I get what you mean," Lydia said, staring forward. "Now that I think about it, there's a lot of things Jackson kept from me... "
"No offense, but I'm glad you broke up," I told her. "We are both going to move on and find better people."
"Yeah, for sure," she replied, but I think she just said that just because.
In another hall, I saw a glimpse of Olivia walking with a boy. I looked back at Lydia who had also seen.
"Well, I'll go back to class now," Lydia said as we stood, dusting her hands. "I assume your curiosity will lead you elsewhere."
I smiled and we parted ways. I turned the corner and exited the school. Olivia was putting the boy inside the police car.
"You're not going to jail, we're just gonna hold you for further questioning," I heard her say.
"Olivia!" I called, walking down the steps.
She closed the door and in there was Issac. I looked back at her, confused.
"What are you doing?" she asked. "Classes are in session."
"Classes can wait," I dismissed. "What's happening? Why is he in there?"
"You know him?" she asked.
"Sort of... yeah," I replied, nodding.
Olivia walked away from the car and started to tell me the details once we were away.
"His father was killed - murdered," Olivia explained.
"Well, why is he in there?" I asked. "Is he a suspect? Olivia?"
"He's been abused by his father," Olivia said. "It makes sense... It gives him a motive."
"A kid who's been abused by his alcoholic father would more likely be scared to do anything," I defended. "Why - where's the sheriff?" She didn't reply and I took off.
"Lucy!"
I had run down the hall and towards the office where I assumed the sheriff was. I was going so fast, I passed it and had to retrace my steps.
