Two Weeks Later

Nora's Point of View

Today was the fifth anniversary of when Jax died and it took everything in me to just get out of bed and get Abel and Thomas ready for school. I decided to call in sick to work and spend the day with Ava. I wasn't sure what we were going to do, but it would better than sitting in front of my computer doing work that really didn't matter at that particular moment.

Ava had suggested we go to the park and then take a walk down Main Street to get ice cream.

"That's a great idea, baby," I said as I zipped up her sweater and we made our way down the walkway of our house to the sidewalk. I decided then that I would also invite Maddie and Angel over for dinner, which would give me an excuse to go into that butcher shop on Main Street just down from the ice cream shop.

We spent a little while at the park. I watched as Ava played make believe. Her long blond hair was blowing slightly in the wind and her smile indicated that she didn't have a care in the world. Sometimes I found myself wishing I could be as carefree as her, as carefree as a child. Right now, I would give anything to have nothing to worry about.

"Ok baby!" I called a few minutes later, "Let's go get that ice cream and pick up some dinner."

Ava jumped off the play structure and barreled towards me, giggling like the happy little girl she was. When she got to me, she reached for my hand and made our way out of the park towards Main Street.

"Momma," Ava said as she skipped beside me, "Is today daddy's day?"

Ava never knew Jax, but I made it my mission to tell her every good thing about him. She didn't understand, fully, what happened to her father, but she did know that today was an important day.

"Yes, it's daddy's anniversary today," I replied, trying to keep the emotion out of my voice, "We should remember your daddy every day, but today is the day we remember him the most."

"Is he going to come home one day?" Ava asked as she slowed to a walk, "I would like to see him..."

I stopped and knelt down in front of her, tucking a strand of blond hair behind her ear. "Baby, maybe one day you will get to see him again when you go to heaven," I replied quietly and carefully, "But he can't come home. He's in heaven, remember? And heaven is forever."

Ava stuck a finger in her mouth and nodded as tears formed in her eyes. It broke my heart that even at the age of four, this little girl standing in front of me could feel so much. She got that trait from me. I kissed her softly on the forehead and flashed her a smile before standing up again and reaching for her hand. She took it and we continued on towards the ice cream shop.

As we rounded the corner onto Main Street, someone ran straight into me, almost knocking me down.

"Momma!" Ava cried out.

"Jes...Nora?" I heard him say as he reached out for my shoulders, holding me so I wouldn't fall backwards. I had spent the last two weeks trying to avoid him with much success and now, this.

"E-EZ," I stammered before looking down at Ava to make sure she was alright.

"I'm sorry," EZ stated as he let go of my shoulders and took a step back, "It's good to see you. Who is this little girl?"

"This is Ava, my four year old," I replied quietly, "Ava, can you say hi to EZ? He's a friend of mommy's."

"Hi, EZ," Ava whispered with her fingers in her mouth, playing shy.

"It's nice to meet you Ava," EZ said with a sweet smile before looking at me, "She's beautiful."

"Thank you," I replied, uncertain of what to do with my hands and unsure of where to look. This man unnerved me and not in a bad way.
