Nora's Point of View
Tuesday Morning
The clubhouse was bustling with activity as I walked in from the back. After a late night visiting at Lyla's the night before, she offered to keep the kids overnight and agreed to bring them back to the clubhouse in the morning. The kids weren't ready to say goodbye just yet and I just didn't feel right pulling them away from their cousins too soon. Lyla was sitting at a table with Maddie and the kids were screaming around the clubhouse like Lyla had fed them ice cream for breakfast. I couldn't help but smile.
"Good morning sleepy head," Lyla said with a smile as I sat down at the table with a groan.
"Good morning," I replied with a smile, "Were the kids good for you?"
"Perfect little angels," Lyla replied, "They were more behaved than my own."
I felt a hand on my shoulder as someone put a giant cup of hot coffee on the table in front of me. I looked up and saw Chibs smiling down at me.
"Good morning, love," Chibs said, "When are you planning on heading out today?"
"Probably around one," I replied before taking a sip of my coffee, "Why, what's up?"
"I was just wondering if you wanted to come for a ride with me?" Chibs asked quietly, "I usually make a stop this time of year, but since I knew you were coming, I thought you might want to come along?"
I took a deep breath, knowing exactly what he was referring to. I had refused to go anywhere near that part of the highway right after Jax died, and for good reason, but this seemed like a special thing Chibs did every year around the anniversary of Jax's death. Chibs wanted to share this moment with me and despite the anxiety building up inside me, I was going to give him this. I reached for Chibs' hand and squeezed it gently and nodded.
"Of course I'll go with you," I said quietly as I noticed Happy standing in a corner of the clubhouse, "Let me know when you want to go."
"I've got a few things to take care of," Chibs replied, "Besides, I think someone wants to talk to you first."
I nodded my head and smiled at him before I stood up and made my way over to Happy. Abel had other ideas, though. He ran towards me and wrapped his arms around my waist and I laughed as I knelt down in front of him.
"Hey baby," I said quietly before kissing him on the forehead.
"Morning, momma," Abel said sweetly, "Do we have to go home today?"
That was a big change from Friday when he didn't want to come at all. "I'm afraid so, baby," I said as I mussed up his hair, "Mommy has to go to work tomorrow, but I promise you, buddy, we'll be back in a couple months. We won't wait as long to come back."
"Good!" Abel exclaimed, "I can't wait to come back and spend more time with my cousins and uncles. How long do we have before we leave?"
"You have a few hours yet," I answered him, "Go play and I'll come get you when it's time to go."
Abel beamed at me before taking off outside where the other kids had run off to already. I stood up and looked over at Happy, who was smiling, and I smiled back. I nodded my head in the direction of the dorm rooms and then made my way down the hall with Happy right behind me. I had avoided Happy since I saw him on Friday, but I knew I could no longer hold him at arms-length. He was going to want to talk to me before I left and guaranteed he wouldn't let me leave until he had his moment. I let him into my room and then closed the door and leaned against it. Looking over at him, I noticed how sad he looked, and Happy never looked sad, ever.
