CHAPTER SIXTEEN:
I Am Woman, Watch Me Scheme

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

SOMETIMES, ZACK COULD REALLY ANNOY KATIE.

Most of the time, it was with an unwarranted side comment or an over the top gesture he deemed was cool (which really wasn't), but other times, he could really hit the nail on the coffin.

This was one of those times.

The twins had invited their father, Kurt Martin, on board to have some 'guy time', or whatever Zack called it, and he had one rule: Katie wasn't allowed to bother them all weekend.

Katie didn't like being told what to do.

So, naturally, she schemed. And schemed, and schemed, and tried to conjure up what would be the one thing that could not necessarily ruin this trip for Zack, but would be irritating enough to get him just the perfect amount of annoyed.

That's when she decided to call Carey.

     "Do you see Dad?"

"Not yet."

Sitting on a cushion, the shadows of the large plant beside her engulfed her petite figure. Katie held a magazine up to her cheeks so that she wouldn't be spotted, but let her eyes eagerly bounce back and forth between the boys and the ship's entrance. A sly smirk tugged the right corner of her lips slightly upward. To any casual guest strolling by, she would appear entirely enthralled in her magazine, but to anyone that knew her... well, that meant they would also know to stay fifty feet away until that smirk was gone.

Which is why she sat as still as she could (other than flipping a page every minute or so), right leg draped over the left, actually being patient for once in her life.

"I can't wait." Zack turned around to face Cody, an electric shock of glee shooting out from him. "A whole weekend of just guy stuff!"

Katie bit back a laugh. Oh, the irony...

Zack titled his head in disapproval as Cody whipped out a bottle of hand sanitizer and carefully squirted a small amount onto his palm.

"Please try not to un-guy it."

You don't have to worry about Cody, Katie replied in her head.

Despite a tense sensation swelling her temples due to aggravation, Katie still found herself questioning whether or not this was the best way to handle this. She knew the boys didn't get to see their father as much as they'd liked, and by calling Carey she was basically taking away the precious time they got to spend with him, but she justified it by avoiding her actions and putting the blame on Zack. Katie already wasn't planning on bothering them this weekend, but Zack saying that she wasn't allowed to just made her much more eager to defy him.
