'Happy sweet sixteen A.' Finnick's hand reached up to my cheek as he caressed it gently. We sat in the middle of the same escape spot we celebrated my birthday at each year. It had become a tradition ever since the first time at age thirteen.
We had only grown closer since then, everyday Finnick would get the train and come and see me. My father had no knowledge of the antics we got
up to, he was convinced I was studying at the library each time.'Thank you Finn.' I placed a soft kiss on his plump cheek.
'So what did you get? Clothes, shoes, endless amount of books?' His mind wandered and he wasn't too far off. I always received an abundance of gifts I'd hardly ever use.
Playing with the ring that sat on my finger I knew that was the most treasured gift. Finnick and Ava had joined forces to find the statement piece, it matched perfectly with my mother's bracelet and the sentiment made me cry this morning when I unwrapped the gift.
'So are you coming to my ball tonight?' My question made Finnick roll his eyes.
'Of course I am, I wouldn't miss Alia's big birthday bash for the world. Speaking of which, we should head off to get ready.' Looking down at the expensive watch that graced his wrist he realised time had once again flew by.
It felt like the past three years had gone by in a whirl, whenever we were together there was no time concept. Three hours felt like mere minutes.
Ready to begin the journey back to the mansion Finnick gathered their jackets up from the floor only to be swarmed by intrusive Capitol citizens. Their cameras ready to go, flashing rapidly at the sight.
'Alia, are you and Finnick dating?' One perked up from the herd.
'We knew it!'
Once one started they all went off like foghorns. Causing a huge commotion as they circled the pair begging for answers.
My hand fanned up to my face in a poor attempt to conceal my identity but it was too late, the hounds had already cast eyes on the presidents daughter. No doubt it'll be spread like wildfire around the Capitol by tomorrow morning.
Finnick grabbed ahold of my wrist gently but firm enough to guide me away from the circle of people. Eager to get back to the safety of the mansion we sped walk in silence.
Snow was sat in the hallway peering down at a newspaper when me and Finnick sheepishly stumbled in the doors.
His face was a picture of annoyance but when the cameras were off it was pretty much his resting face. His emotions had always been difficult to read.
'Where have the two of you been?' His eyes peered up from his spectacles making him look even older than he already did.
My feet shuffled beneath me reluctantly as I fumbled around for any excuse. 'The library of course, studying doesn't stop for a birthday.'
Finnick nodded alongside supporting this theory.
'Neither of you are holding any books?' Suspicion arose in my father.
'We handed them all back, didn't have time to search for any new ones today.' I was impressed with how quick Finnick managed to spew another fib.
President Snow's face didn't turn at all and after a few seconds of looking between the two of them he ordered Finnick to go and prepare for the party. Turning to face his daughter his mouth opened and closed as if he was hesitant to even say a word to me.
'You look like a goldfish when you do that.' Cheekiness was my worst asset, sometimes I just couldn't keep my big mouth shut.
His frail hands dropped the newspaper that previously entertained him giving his worst daughter his full attention.
'How many times have I told you to stay away from Finnick?'
Countless times, at least twice a week actually. Finnick was a regular topic between these four walls.
'I'm not allowed to have friends?' The sentence came out more argumentative than I had intended.
'Of course you can have friends Alia. You can be friends with the hundreds of Capitol children. Not the Victors!' Spitting as he spoke the old man looked about ready to explode with anger.
President Snow insisted on a divide between the Victors and his daughter. I guessed it was to keep secrets hidden, I've never been able to find out what kind though. All I have realised over the years is that no Victor is ever happy. Between depression, drug use and alcohol they rarely chose a different path of life.
Blood trickled down the four corners of my fathers mouth as he looked my way, disappointment clouding his squinted eyes.
'Just get out of my sight.'
