The sound of a chair being dragged pulled me out of the fantasy world that I was in. Ava and I were at 'The secret library' having breakfast on this very fine day. After a long month of going back and forth with her family and the emergency that came upon them, Ava finally returned home on Wednesday night and invited herself to my home the next day at dot 7. She then forcefully dragged me here to the cafe to have breakfast and 'spill the tea'.
But the moment we entered the cafe, a certain tall, buff man, old enough to be called my dad caught Ava's eyes. And with the sound of the chair being dragged, it was safe to say that Ava caught the big guy's eyes too. She and I were sitting opposite each other and the guy was now perched between us both, straddling the chair backwards. He had an easy-going smile on his face that made the corner of his eyes crinkle and his dimples pop out.
"I'm Jay."
Jay had a deep manly voice that was slightly scratchy, most likely due to smoking. I could see Ava swooning at his deep voice. I stifled my laugh by placing my hands on the table and covering my mouth. I noticed Ava staring at Jay with those heart eyes so I took it upon myself to introduce the both of us, "Ava and Aaliyah."
Jay's smile widened upon hearing our names and I kicked Ava hard under the table. If she wanted to start something with this guy she needed to pick her jaw back up, relax her very wide eyes and maybe breathe some air through her nostrils or else I was going to drive the guy away so that I could listen to her family tea that I was deprived of because of him.
At my hard kick, Ava snapped out of whatever phase she was stuck in quickly and smoothly began a conversation with Jay. Letting out a sigh of relief I go back to reading my book, hoping they won't include me in their conversation. A few minutes later and I was once again engrossed in the book and on the edge of my seat because Margaret was very close to finding out her mom's murderer. I had my book in one hand and my glass filled with orange juice in the other when a huge load of cash was dumped on the table before me suddenly.
I jumped in my seat, spilling the juice over my thighs, thankfully none of it fell on the book or else Mrs Naomi would've never let me hear the end of it. I snapped my wide eyes to Jay, thinking it was him who dropped the cash down with a thud but I saw him looking at someone behind me. I tilted my head backwards and found a guy hovering over me lazily.
"Tanner said it's your money. He also gave me a note but I used it to spit my gum out. I can't even spit my gum out without those crazy bitches complaining about it getting stuck under their shoe," he grumbled under his breath and kept swirling a toothpick around in his mouth.
"Who the fuck is Tanner and why do you owe him money?" Before I could even open my mouth Ava shot her questions at me and I spun around to face the guy, indirectly expecting him to answer Ava's question. Shrugging at Ava, the guy turned around to walk out of the cafe.
